As I recall, the Head Gasket blowing 2.5's were the DOHC ones. The 2.5 on the 96-99 LGT was DOHC and was a headgasket eater...

Oh and clarification: The 1996 EJ22 may or may not be interference. Most likely, it is not. However, it will be equipped with the solid valves, not the HLA's like on the older EJ22's. The official change in the EJ22 to interference was supposedly started with the 1997 MY due to a change in the crown of the piston.
