In simple terms you can do what you like with the ECU but you can not sell the modified ECU. It all comes down to monetory gain from someone elses intellectial property.

Then basically, you are saying that LAN is currently engaged in an illegal business. Since he is still very much "alive and well," I cannot see this as being the case?
