Hi Markyboy,

If the steering wheel is not straight then that would definitely cause a problem. There is a sensor on the steering column down behind the brake pedal. This sensor tells the 4WS unit where the steering wheel is pointing. The control unit will get upset if the column position doesn't match up with the wheel position.

This thread might be of help to you, from page 2 onwards. It's the only real troubleshooting anyone here has done with regard to 4WS. Be sure to read right to the end because we took a few wrong paths along the way.

By virtue of being the only person in the UK to have worked on one, you are now the UK 4WS expert. If you don't mind me asking, where was the rear wheel steering speed sensor located and what drives it. Is it different from the normal VSS1 in the transmission and VSS2 in the front diff?
