When removing the old tranny filter, just pull one hose off at a time, and use your finger to stop it, put the new one on, paying attention to the correct flow, and extremely little fluid dribbles out. Only what was in the old filter was lost, and in my case the tranny dipstick still read full after the filter was replaced. Good luck.

BIRD : do you happen to have the part number for the kit. I'm sure it must be the same number for up here in Canada.
I've talked to two different Subaru parts people and they are somewhat clueless as to this part and I want to make sure I have the right part before I order it.
