40/36, 38/34, 34/30... just keep the proportions close to stock and don't exceed the tire manufacturer's maximum rating on the sidewall. Generally, softer tires will have a tad more bite and harder tires yield a slightly firmer ride and better fuel economy.

28 seems awfully low to me, even for the rears.
