Kev a bit of work on the valve body, in the area of the accumulators can help the changes. The SVX boasted that the gear changes were undetectable, and a lot of work went in to achieving this. The accumulators soften the application of the clutches and band, and flow restrictions slow their application.

But it is the Tcu that calls the shots, it controls the engine torque and the line pressure, during the changes. So the changes will always be slower than you want. In the past I have suggested that one of the other Subaru Tcu be tried to see if the programing of the change is different. I would suggest that the TCU from one of the smaller capacity cars, like the 1800 auto, as these have less power, the change would be faster with less torque control. So it would be worth trying.
