If you're looking from the driver's perspective (which is the most frequent point of measurement), it's on the left. Of course, if you're standing and looking into the engine bay, it's on the right -- ergo the confusion. Instructions should always be given from the driver's point of view.
I walked into the tranny shop one afternoon (they were working on my tranny for the umpteenth time), and they said they were having trouble figuring "something" out. I asked them if they'd checked the voltage to the resistor and I pointed to it. The owner of the shop said, "there's that resistor you were looking for." The tech replied, "The Subaru consultant in California said it's on the left." To which I replied, "It is, if you're sitting in the driver's seat." It's tough when your only option is an independent shop.
