Well I've been a Lift Operator for 9 years now (yikes! I should get retirement soon!). I make around $6.50 an hour which when you figure I need to get up at 5:30am to get there really makes my wife mad!!! The benefit is I haven't paid to ski in nearly 4 years. Only place that won't comp. me durning the week is Killington and as far as I'm concerned that's just fine as Killington is rarely decent anyway.
As for your knee issues, Should it get worse you might want to try Telemarking. Trust me it'll take all the pressure off your knee (granted it'll put it on your hamstring and calf muscles but your knees will be great)!
