I think you need to investigate a little "wheel like thing" that fits up to a 3/8" drive extension. I wish I knew it's name, I think I got mine at sears. It's basically a square 3/8" drive fitting connected with a knurled circle about 1.5" in diameter so you can use your fingers to turn a socket.

here's the process I used: put a 3" extension on the spark plug socket. put this on the spark plug. get a rachet onto the extension and use it to free up the plug. take rachet off extension. Use small "wheel" thing to get plug all the way un-threaded. Had to follow this procedure because rachet couldn't get plug out without contacting body before plug was fully loose.

reverse process to install. my engine was overnight cold during all this of course.
