That's the door checker as it's called. The door has to come apart to fix it. The checker has springs and the springs rust and the rust gets in the plastic rollers. The roller are suposed to rotate against the flat bar with the stop indents. The rust jams the rollers and this makes the cracking like something is breaking noise. If you use white lithium grease, the stuck rollers will slide over the bar better but will get flat spots sooner or later from sliding on the indent bar. I took mine apart and cleaned and lubricated the whole thing. It's a time consummmmmming job.
