Joe this is from a previous post,

quote:

This is. how the gear ratio numbers work out. As the ratio is lowered (larger number) the speed is reduced and the torque is increased at the wheels.

STANDARD SVX 3.545 final ratio.
GEAR....RATIO......OVERALL....SPEED @ 6800...TORQUE @ WHEELS
TC...........1:1/2:1
1..............2.875..........10.19............... ..49...................2323ft/lbs
2..............1.545...........5.47............... ...92...................1247
3..............1.0...............3.545............ ..142.....................808
4..............0.694...........2.46............... .204.....................560
FD...........3.545

SVX 4eat with 4.44 final ratio
1.............2.875...........12.7................ .39.....................2895
2.............1.545...........6.85................ .73.....................1561
3.............1.0...............4.44.............. .113.....................1012
4.............0.694...........3.08...............1 63.......................702
FD............4.44

5speed with 4.44 final ratio
1.............3.545............13.8............... .32.......................3146
2.............2.11...............8.2.............. ...54.......................1869
3.............1.448.............5.6............... ..78.......................1276
4.............1.088.............4.2............... 104.........................957
5.............0.875.............3.5............... 156.........................798
FD...........4.44
The difference in ratio is 20%. That equates to a 20% reduction in speed and a 20% incress in torque at the wheels. It also reduces the load on the gear box by 20%. So the Legacy box will survive in the SVX as long as a low final drive ratio is used. Though it would be in the danger zone if more torque is extracted from the engine.
In the same way the auto box with the same final drive reduction would have 20% less load applied to it. Allowing. a 20% increase in engine torque before it is back to the same applied load as standard. You also must realise that the torque. converter in the auto can change ratio from 1:1 to 2:1 thus doubling the torque available from the engine and varying all the gear ratios.
The end result is that if you want to use a 5 speed don't work the engine. If you are going to work the engine use the auto box with the lower final drive ratio, it will handle more torque that the 5 speed .

Joe the mph/1000rpm, would drop from 30mph/1000rpm, for the 3.545. to 25mph/1000rpm. for the 4.44.
Harvey.
