This is what I did, found a local rebuilder. The alternator pumped out good power for two more years, and was still going strong when I sold my SVX.

I seached and found many people that have done 4.44 swaps, but haven't found a list of which US models have 4.44 FDR that I could go to a junkyard and get a rear end out of.

They both do fairly well. Both have some body roll. The RS is a bit better at it though.

I ran mine in 1 most of the time, there was one long straight where I would shift to 2, but right back into one after that. The courses I race at are usually smaller, so they are a bit lower speed...

I've done very well in the past autocrossing my stock SVX. I could get the rear to rotate nicely when I needed it to, and I had ample power, just kept it in first gear most all of the time.

Since it is a '97 and with so few miles, I would personally keep it stock other than an external Tranny cooler and maybe the tune from LAN. I can't wait to see pictures.

So I checked on 96 2.2L vs 97 2.2L out of Impreza Outbacks, which should be the same engine that they put in the Legacies those years, and the part numbers for the heads for those two years are...

Although the 96 and 97 are both 2.2L SOHC with single port exhaust, the 96 is a non-interference engine, and the 97 is an interference engine, so I think they must have changed head designs, and...

Like mike said. When valve seals go bad, usually oil will seep down the valve and into the combusion chamber, and be burned on startup. Unless the valve seals are really really bad, I see smoking...

Guy at work has an STi with Potenza RE070s and it will hardly move in the snow. I'd say there probably isn't a problem with your AWD system. Normally if a solenoid C starts to fail, you'll get too...
