well, as luck would have it, no good repair deed goes unpunished. looks like I have to replace the front driver side ABS sensor (long story as to why!). I have a spare unit from the passenger side...

Diagnostic Codes for '96 AWD

I printed the diagnostic code retrieval procedure (ECU) from the "how-to" pages and when I found the black connector I did not have the same pin-outs. The connector was the same as in the pictures...
