But would a failing coil cause this severity of jerking? The whole car jerks as though all 6 pots are stopping and starting simultaneously. My UK model is OBD 1, not OBD 2 and the only historic code...

No, mine is a yellow 1996 and lives in the Isle of Man except in summer when it visits the south of England. Supported by a 1995 Legacy estate, 2002 Impreza and a 2004 Forester, all non-turbo.
