I don't think the switch is the cause of your lack of power steering. The switch tells the engine to raise the idle speed when the wheel is turned to full lock to stop it from stalling.

Well I finally got it running on my own.
Somehow I had 2 bad crank sensors at the same time. Also of the four various sensors I found in my parts bins and spare engine, 3 were no good. I bought 2...

The '97 died on the wife last week. She called me and described the symptoms. I said "crank sensor". I got the car to start and drove it home. Read the code and it was the sensor.
