Yes I did it. I backed my wife's '06 Outback into my '94 SVX. A driveway crash. Ouch. The damage to the vehicles was far smaller that the loss of the accumulated "marital points".
I hate it...

I cleared them earlier, using the pins in the socket. It took a half dozen drive cycles - maybe 40 miles total over a couple of days for the same codes to reappear.
I'll disconnect the battery...

I paid $450 for one in almost perfect condition. Be prepared to go deeper though. Once inside, I found the pinion shaft had a great deal of play, meaning bad bearings on the shaft, bad seal...
