Remove cowl (vented portion)

Did searching but nothing came up for this specific request. I am looking to figure out how the front cowl panel is removed. I want to prep/paint it off the car. I already removed the little screw rivets, one on each side along with the weather stripping. Both ends of the cowls are able to be pried up but I am nervous about doing anything to strong as this is 20 year old plastic. The other question is regarding the cowl panel directly attached to the windshield. Is this able to be easily removed? If so what are those procedures?

Here is the only picture of the cowl I was able to find.

Re: Remove cowl (vented portion)

.

PM Marisa "cozykat" about this. She has all the info on what needs to be done.

Basically after you remove the large cowl panel at the base o the windshield. The two cowl parts (with the grille) come out by twisting quarter-turn lock screws that hold them on. Not attached to the windshield.

These parts are no longer available; Cozykat bought the last two in existence.

Parts 1 & 2, the rubber end caps that attach to the ends, only come as part of the cowl. Not available separately. These are the rubber pieces that the back corners of the hood contact when opening. They just dry out, rip and tear.

Re: Remove cowl (vented portion)

So it sounds like the base cowl (windshield part) needs to be removed first.

I sent a PM to cozycat but if anyone has additional info that would be appreciated :)

Thanks

Re: Remove cowl (vented portion)

I wanted to update for anyone that may need this in the future. After carefully trying to remove the cowl I found the method and took some pictures (Assumes wiper arms have already been removed).

1. First gently insert a very thin flat blade between the windshield and rubber seal on the cowl (non-vented portion). Be careful not to tear or rip the rubber seal.

2. Pry the up by either turning your flat object on its side or by pulling up. Wait for the pop and continue down the front of the car.

3. After removing the metal cowl, spray some penetrating lubricant on each plastic pop-it female end. This will free-up the plastic piece to allow it to rotate.

4. After rotating each plastic piece 90 degrees the lower vented cowl can now be removed. These are two separate pieces.

Here are some pictures that should help explain what I referred to above:

Right now I cleaned all three parts and have them prepped for some SEM Trim Paint. I already did the wiper arms and love the results with this paint. I will post pictures afterward if the results of the cowl painting are noteworthy.
