I give up on EBC brakes... anyone use some regular brands?
I give up. The guy told me they don't make EBC greenstuff pads for that application, even though someone here said they had them on their SVX. Whatever.
Anyway, I am going to need pads THIS WEEK. Anyone have any reccommendations that I can pick up anywhere? Like carquest, checker, weaver, napa, etc??? - Ca$h |

Oh, and they are "greenish" in color, if that helps. :D |
Cash,
I'm the guy that said he had them, but I didn't source them - they were on the car when I bought it. I just know they are greenstuff because I took my front brakes off to check the tightness of the guide pins. I know the PO made frequent trips to Europe, maybe they are available there but not in the US. Or maybe they had been laying about for some time - can't answer that. Anyway, I'm contacting a company called precision brakes to see what they offer (pads and SS lines, etc). On their web page they list both drilled and drilled/slotted rotors for the SVX ($110 and 125 each respectively with a discount for members - whatever that requires). They also work group deals if anybody is interested. Have no idea about the reliability/reputation of these guys. |
So go to the dealer and order their expensive pads? :\

Bendix are supposed to be quite good and very reasonably priced (my fronts were $63AU) - also, an option for aftermarket discs would be Disc Brakes Australia (DBA) - slotted rotors and the like - may not be practical to ship to US considering the multitude of products you may have Stateside but for your info anyways in case it helps.

Pads
Cash, SVX pads from the dealer aren't as expensive as you think. I currently have pro-line $28 pads on. They're about shot. Put them on about 9k ago (might get 15k out of them). The last pads I had on there were OEM. They were on there when I got the car with about 3/4 wear left in them. I put 30k on them before they wore out. So I'm guessing they'd be good for about 40k give or take. Do the math and without even taking into account labor you'll make out better with OEM. Are there better brakes than OEM out there? Well sure, but dollar for dollar the OEMs aren't bad. When the SVX first came out its braking ability was compared to that of BMW Ms, Porsche and Mercedes as far as stopping distance. If I remember correctly it was right around 180ft from 70. Today, that's still in the top 1/10 of all vehicles sold.

The place I referred to earlier (Precision Brakes) is a US retail sales outfit for the DBA drilled and/or slotted rotors - does DBA have a good rep in AU?
Here's the link for those interested. http://www.precisionbrakes.com/index.htm |
I got about 30,000 miles out of a set of stock pads... I like to drive 'spiritedly' though.

Harvey, thanks for the recommendation.
Precision sells slotted DBA rotors for $100 each (don't know about shipping costs). I have asked for group pricing on rotors, SS lines, pads, and upgrade kits (bigger calipers/rotors). waiting to hear from them. will post what they have to say. |

Akebono ceramic pads are $37 (front) at www.philsinc.com Evanston, IL. that's what I have, not enough miles for an opinion. |
Axxis Metal Masters (used to be Repco Metal Masters) are highly regarded in some circles, and relatively inexpensive - maybe $80 all around. Racers have used them and are pretty complementary. The ones I had on my '75 280Z were great, but that was 20 years ago. Squeal-free and dustless.
Good luck with your search. |
