Re: problem with heat

The thermostat is located on the front of the water pump where the lower rad hose goes into the engine. There are two 10mm bolts holding the t-stat cover on. Drain the rad first, remove the lower hose, remove the t-stat cover, remove old t-stat, install new one with new gasket, replace cover and hose, fill and bleed coolant.

Re: problem with heat

If you are getting no heat whatsoever, its much more likely theres a problem with the mix door or control system, or you are very low on coolant, OR your water-pump is toast.

A stuck open thermostat will still allow the engine to get warm enough for heat.

Re: problem with heat

If the temp. gauge reads normal when driving the car, then look at the air mix door as Socal mentioned.

wheres the air mix door
Under the passenger's side dash next to the center console. Rectangular box with 2 white nylon rods connected to it. They operate the air mix doors but the nylon gear that pushes and pulls them can get fouled with dirt or be stripped. First check if you are getting power to it. It's a pain to change but can be done without removing the glovebox or dash. Fortunately mine worked again with a good cleaning.

Re: problem with heat

Don't have any pictures but here is the parts diagram from Subaruparts.com.
The mix motor is #2 on the bottom of the heater box. The mix door rods are #7 and #8. You might try giving them a nudge while raising and lowering the temperature and see if they will start working again. Also a power test to the electrical plug to see if a signal is coming from the AC control unit.
