battery dead, can't jumpstart?!?
So here's the problem, car sat for 2 weeks, fired up fine then, but now when I go to start it absolutely nothing, no lights, nada. So I then attempted to jumpstart it with my other car, as soon as I hooked up all the terminals the security system went off (aftermarket), all the lights were blinking off and on and when I tried to start the car i would get a very fast clunking sound that coincided with the check engine light blinking.
So I am kind of at a loss as to why I can't even get the car to start when I try to jumpstart it, this has happened before and I simply jumpstarted the car and it would turn over. I was thinking that perhaps the aftermarket security system was preventing the car from starting, but then why would it not start this time as when the car died in the past a jumpstart would solve the problem. Also what doesn't help is the remote transmitter to turn off the alarm system is lost. Also, this car (96 lsi) as well as my 92 (ls-l) both seem to drain batteries. I rarely drive either, may once every few weeks. What would be the issue for a continually draining battery? I always make sure to turn off the security light, but other than that, what gives? any help, advice is appreciated. thanks. Chris |
Re: battery dead, can't jumpstart?!?
If you only drive the car once every few weeks, you should really invest in battery maintainers. This way, your batteries stay new and your car starts every time.
As for the jumping issue - I've never been able to jump a car that is bone dead. The donor car just can't generate enough power to jump a completely dead car. Usually, it requires some sort of power pack to provide the necessary power. |
Re: battery dead, can't jumpstart?!?
remove the terminals from the battery and test the voltage. Sounds like lacking gnd.

Or the terminals are have corrosion and they are not making the proper contact.

Re: battery dead, can't jumpstart?!?
thanks guys, maybe I'll try a new battery and see if that helps.
Also, where are the ground points throughout the car that I should be checking? |
Re: battery dead, can't jumpstart?!?
For your symptoms, id check the main one from the negative terminal to the chassis there next to the battery. Also from the engine to the chassis on the rear firewall. If the battery is completely dead, it helps a lot to let the jumping car run for at least a few minutes to build a charge in your dead one before trying to jump..... and keep it revved a little.... most alternators charge the best at around 2000 to 2300 RPM.

Re: battery dead, can't jumpstart?!?
So Cal, checked the grounds, everything looked in order. I also charged the battery with my portable battery charger. Battery is now charged, but still, once I open the doors the alarm goes off, again i can't shut it off b/c I lost the transmitter, and nothing when I turn the ignition. Alarm goes off both when the door is open and closed, I dunno I am at a loss....

Manufactuer is Code Alarm, Inc and the model is CSM-2

Chris-
Look up under the dash where the large ignition power wires are. See if any of them have been tapped into by the aftermarket alarm. If they have, remove the aftermarket wiring. Mike |
Re: battery dead, can't jumpstart?!?
yeah, i'll likely remove the security module they have crammed up underneath the dash, its just a PIA to get too!
