Too much torque can be a bad thing...
We haven't posted much info about the swap progress yet, but Tom at AWD is working to swap a Phase 2 4EAT into Melis's 92 Pearly. The major hold up was some wiring issues and my schedule which left the car unworked on for about a month.
Me and Melis went back down to NJ yesterday with a speedo corrector fresh from Australia and hopes of finishing the conversion. One of the issues was the Torque Control didn't seem to be working right and would begin to cut fuel at anything above 1/2 idle. There are two signals out of the new TCU where we only had one, so we snipped the one wire, and proceeded to test it by power braking and revving it. Well that did it cause now it revved great with no sputtering:D:D ...then "crunch" "snap"...:( Tom looks under the car to see a big puddle of gear fluid  At this point I think pics say it best... After getting it on the lift, we saw this; http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...d/DSCF0960.jpg After pulling it off we saw the crack went almost all the way to the top. It also sheared off the oil pump drive; http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...d/DSCF0970.jpg Here are pieces of the case; http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...d/DSCF0965.jpg Other pics here Thinking there may have been a slight stress crack in the case already and we finished it off??? |

OMG! Makes Chike's cracked front diff look like child's play...
-Bill p.s. any further "pointers" toward what siezed? |
Re: Too much torque can be a bad thing...
that wont be cheap in the long haul.
new front diff, and new tranny required.....think it was already cracked? were the guide pins to block both in there? |

Re: Too much torque can be a bad thing...
nothing seized really. Just got full power from the powerblocking. i didn't even notice what the rpms were at when I was doing it just listening to the engine. I was actually beginning to let off when it happened. Initial thoughts are that the case was weak or cracked in the first place and we were simply not aware of it.
We will be fitting a phase 1 case to the new trans so we can use the stock speed sensor #2 as long as we can use the phase I carrier on the new gearset. I will be investigating this a little later in the week to see if it is possible. tom |

Re: Too much torque can be a bad thing...
I am far from an expert but at a glance I would surmise it might be broken...

Re: Too much torque can be a bad thing...
You guys need to find one of those 5EATs from the JDM WRX's and try swapping in one of those. That would be rocksome.

If I win the Publishers Clearing House millions you know I'd give them a blank check for whatever, but until then the project needs to start off small and work it's way up.
I still say if I wasn't there to witness the mess I wouldn't believe it. Smiles, Melis |
Re: Too much torque can be a bad thing...
This is a really cool project, I am glad someone is finally undertaking it. Hopefully, we can have a kit like we do for a m/t conversion, I would really like to have a 5eat, especially with that VTD AWD
