Replacement hood struts / shocks / stays
All,
In my quest to save money and replace my hood struts I found an ideal replacement. Napa sells a good strut, Strong Arm part# 819-5227. If anyones interested I can do a write up. You have to re-use your original strut hinge. It took a little cutting, drilling, etc. to get them to work (no drilling/cutting on the car !!!!) but no more then a half an hour each. They work beautifully and only cost $18 USD. :) Pics in my locker. |
Sure, do a writeup and submit it to the SVXipedia. I'm working on 2 articles right now so I'll probably get it published this evening.

The fit-n-finish look great! The hood sticks up higher than stock...but that'll give you more room when working on the car.
http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/fil...eme/29915s.jpg What happened to the heatshield on the underside of your hood? It looks like something blew off and whacked it pretty darn good! -Chike |
If you email it to me, I will put it in the How-To Documents as well. :)

Super. I replaced mine with some used ones and they're not going to last much longer. I'd love to see a writeup on it.

CloseUps
Would be nice to see closeups of the ends to get an idea of modifications required. They do look great and it does have advantages for the hood to be higher.

Cool... I'll get to the write up either later today or sometime this week. Is there a preferred format (word, pdf, etc.)
The struts are actually 1/4" shorter then stock. I think the picture angle makes it look like the hood is higher  I'll get some better picks in the write up as well as close ups etc. |
I would like it in Word, but others may like it in pdf. Thanks.
:) :) |
O.K. Finished the How to...I posted the pdf version in my locker and I'm emailing the Word version to you now ensteele. Txs, Marc ;)
EDIT: could'nt send you an email ensteele. Can you get the word doc from my locker? |
Nice write up!
|
Yes, I will get it there. What was the problem with the email? Sorry!
Thanks for the write up. :) :) |
Good write up, but do you have a picture of the other end of the strut? Is it the same as the other one? A picture of both of them side by side would be good too. :) Sorry that I want to see some pictures that you don't have in the write up. :)

Txs...
email - when I went to send private message...I could'nt find a place to attach a file. I'm new here so maybe I overlooked it. When I went to your Public profile and tried to send you an email I got "Sorry! That user has specified that they do not wish to receive emails. If you still wish to send an email to this user, please contact the administrator and they may be able to help." Picture of old strut/Different ones side by side-I added a picture of the new struts to my folder and to the how to (got the pics of ebay). The ends of the two different struts look identical at first glance. You have to look closely to tell that one has the tip that screws off and the other has a tip with a cir-clip. I bought one from one store and the other from another store closer to home. Did'nt realize they were different until I got them home. Sorry but I don't have any close up pics of the cir-clip end or the threaed end. I threw them away before I knew I was going to make this how to. :o Maybe someone can augment the how to using the circlip style. The procedure would be identical...substitute a washer and the circlip for the 10mm nut. |
