How can I tell a FWD or AWD tranny

Ok I'm going to the dealer in the morning to let him inspect my FWD 92 SVX

He wants to inspect the transmission to see if its AWD of FWD

Would an AWD tranny leak without the rear driveshaft ?

Would an AWD tranny work without a rear driveshaft?

Is there any other car transmission that would work in my 92 SVX and how could I tell the difference between that one and an FWD SVX transmission

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have to leave here at 9 am EST to go to the dealer

Pictures would be awesome or a link to pictures

Also how much would it be to get a AWD tranny and rear driveshaft and have them put in .. I was figuring $1500 plus installation but just a guess

Yes the trans would leak without a driveshaft. There is a good way to check. Look under the rear bumper and let me know if u see a differential. Then try to look far enough under there to see if there is a driveshaft. Did you ever look in the fusebox under the hood to see if someone put the FWD fuse in?? It is a 10 amp fuse socket. To activate AWD it needs to be removed. Just some things to look at....

The diff is there but no rear driveshaft I remember that from when I had it at meineke to do the exhaust

I'll run out to look for that fuse

WTF??? Thats dumb... Look at the back of the transmission(try to get it up on jack stands). If the back is just flat, someone swapped in a FWD trans. If it has a spout looking thing comming out of it it is an AWD trans...

This is an AWD trans. the left side is the back, that is the spout you are looking for

Just had a thought, the driveshaft is almost hidden by heatsheilds ontop of the exhaust. Look very closely at the back of the trans to see if the driveshaft is hooked up, also sheck the front of the rear diff, if it is a component shaft, it is possible to remove the rear portion

I wo nt be able to get under the car until tomorrow at the dealer but

as far as fuses if youre standing in front of the car (fuse box on the right)there is one fuse missing on the right side of the fuse box not the very first one (thats a 10 amp) but the one right behind it

TomsSVX 08-22-2005 10:51 PM

Did you look to see where the FWD fuse is labeled on the cover?? I do not have my SVX to use as a reference so I cannot hep you there

just check to make sure that the driveshaft is there, also search some lockers, maybe you will turn up a pic of the fusebox cover.

I'm positive the driveshaft wasnt there the guy pointed it out and it was plain as day... I'm off to bed I'll update tomorrow

Is there any FWD tranny that will bolt up besides the SVX's ?

I'll check back here int he morning ( in a few hours ) when I get up to go

you can use impreza and legacy FWD tranny's...any subaru tranny will bolt up to the engine.

TomsSVX 08-22-2005 11:13 PM

any trans from i believe 91 up to 97 will bolt in. Since in 96 Subaru no longer offered FWD in any vehicle I would say from 91 to 95 any FWD trans will bolt up. I had a FWD and replaced the stocker with a 91 legacy trans. All FWD trannies have a gear ratio of 3.7 to 1 as their final drive.
