Blown dash light

I lost the drive light on my dash board. Park, reverse, etc. work fine. Is this going to be an expensive fix or something that is easy enough to fix on my own. I tried looking up removing the guages in the how to section but there is nothing about it. Search did not yeild much either. Any ideas?

I really don't want to spend $40 or something like that at a dealer to install a $.50 blub.

There are how-to's floating around on the removal process. If the missing light bothers you that much then go ahead and change it yourself. I would wait for another bulb to go out before I decide to take it apart.

Funny, my 'D' light on my dash went out as well. I'm also waiting for another light to go out first before attempting a fix...

I was thinking if the bulbs were cheap I would just replace all of them depending on how many there are. That way I don't have to worry about it for a while.

And I must have been using the wrong search terms cause I did not see any how to's. I remeber seeing pictures of the dash torn apart before but I just can't seem to find them now when I need them.

The D light on my wifes went out and it was bugging me so I pulled the cluster and swapped the "1" bulb with the burnt out D one. They also looked like a special bulb that only the dealer would carry. It is about 1-1.5" and is very small. It took only about 20 min to pull the cluster. If I pull it again I'll post pics.

I need a how-to as well. Does anybody have any links?

Read through that this morning, oddly enough.

Thanks a lot. Now I just need to figure out what type of bulb is used and how many watts it is supposed to be.

do a search for "radio shack bulb" you will find many posts with all you need to know.

That's funny. My "D" light bulb on the dash doesn't work either. It doesn't really bother me though. My Legacy doesn't have a dash indicator for gears, so I got used to it.

I vote for svxash's fix, it worked for me. :D 'D' light prolly burns out first due to being lit the most, '1' almost never used, so...

Any idea if this is the right bulb? http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/atta...=&postid=75165
Seems to be that bulb that people are mentioning but will it work in the guage cluster? The posts I saw about it mentioned use in buttons like fog lights and cruse control.

Beav 10-28-2004 10:25 AM

Would just have to make the leads long enough to reach to the end of the tube-style base the bulb sits in. I didn't think it was worth the effort, but that's just me...

Wiz 10-28-2004 10:36 AM

Well I could probably cut the leads off the bad bulb and solder them to the good one. Its either that or get the dealer to fix it for $80, because for some reson they can't tell me exactly what part number I need until they see the car. So I can't use the right light bulb if I do it on my own I guess.

Beav 10-28-2004 08:05 PM

The leads are naked (bare - as in uninsulated) and OE replacements are more than just the bulb, they include the extended tube/base. Same with the other lamps that use that bulb, they just have shorter tubes. Now you see my lazy butt decision wasn't because I was all that lazy...

Personally I'd try PN# 85066PA030 Bulb. Which would be #24 here:
