Removing steering column?

I have EVERYTHING disconnected. I'm 100% sure of that. I loosened the bolt on the u joint in the engine bay as well. I've gotten it to slide most of the way out of the u-joint. It seems that no matter what I do I can't get it to come through the firewall. There is something metal under the boot in the engine bay, does that have to come out? If so how? Or do I just need to pull a lot harder than I have? Thanks guys.

Shouldn't be hard to pull out at all. you are probably getting hung up on something. Aslo the universal joints can be decieving, even when it is only partial engaged it can be hard to seperate. try to pry it apart to loosen and have someone help you pry it as u pull on the column. they can also help guide it through the opening once it is free.
