Ticking problem

I've been driving my car for about a year with a lifter tap. I used to run Valvoline Max Life 5w30 in the motor, but soon switched to Amsoil 10w30 synthetic thinking that it might soften the tap. I switched the to Amsoil 5w30 this winter. During the last oil change I dumped some engine flush and ran it for 5 min as directed, while it was runnin the tap never quieted. I'm out of ideas and want to try everything just short replacing the lifters, which wouldn't be a problem just tight on funds right now. Any help would be really appreciated.

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, as your problem describes my exactly. I have done 2x engine flush, oil changes, different weights, ATF in the oil, and nothing stops the ticking. I can't afford to change the lifters either.

Seafoam FTW

Yeah, SeaFoam in the oil works well.

Please tell us more about this mysterious Seafoam!

The last time I heard members talking about Seafoam, it was being introduced into the intake manifold?

What is it exactly and where do you buy it?

Thanks,

You should be able to buy it at autozone or napa. You can add it to oil 1oz to 1qt you can suck it up through a vaccum hose to clean the intake manifold. You can also add it to your gasoline via the fuel tank. You can also buy it in aerosol form.

Mine cleared up with the engine oil flush - like you already tried.
Some have also had luck with marvel mystery oil.
There has also been talk on here of putting some ATF in the oil - something the porsche guys do.

Manarius 03-26-2006 08:44 PM

Running it through the intake won't do anything but to clean up the pistons. Run it though the oil and it may be able to stop the tapping lifter. Also, if you're going to run it into the intake, run it through the PCV valve, not the vacuum lines.

How loud is this ticking? I've had a couple of Subarus with valvetrains that sounded like an antique sewing machine coming apart, and nothing ever broke. That is to say, what you're hearing could be normal. Injectors tick, too.

Whatever; if you do have a mechanical problem, no Flush or Mystery Oil Magical Seaweed Potion is gonna fix it. If it does... it was never really a problem.

That said, my SVX is definitely the quietest Suby I've encountered.

You can remove the intake boot and open the throttle plates and spray in there. I had a loud diesel tapping sound and I added half a can to the oil. Within several seconds of restarting the car the tap was gone. All the skeptics must have a hard time parting with $6-7 bucks.

seafoam is a great product, i has haveing a bit of accel lag, so i dumped a can in when i filled up gas, and it brought it back to life. definatly the best 6$ ive spend on an additave. lol (man i sound like a freeking commercial...:D)

Electrophil 03-27-2006 03:04 PM

A flush shut mine completely up..... for about 6 months. :( It is now basically back to sewing machine city.

I'm going to try some of this seafoam myself.

Then I'm going to start a MLM, and come back exclaiming how good it worked!

(Starter paks only $3000! Come on guys!!)

Holy crap it was embarassing driving my car today. The ticking is SO LOUD! You know when you used to put hockey cards in your bike spokes? It's like that times about 100.

This is pretty much the last straw, I have to do something serious about it now. No more hoping for cleaners and flushing to unstick it, I guess I'll have to pay through the ****ing nose to have the lifter replaced. Why is it that I can go days without this happenening, then go a wekk where it's a problem??

I should be PROUD to drive around in the X, not shrugging down hoping people don't realize MY car is the tick-machine.

TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK.
