I'm sure this thread has already been done at some point, but I'm just curious as to what engine everyone loves as well as which engine everyone despises.

My personal fave would obviously be the EG-33, but my all time fave engine would have to be the SR20-DETT. Everyone seems to be in love with the power or the RB26-DETT, But the SR20 just seems more appealing. And I can't get over the sleek looks of the S-15 Silvia.

My all time most disliked engine would have to be anything remotely associated with the letters V-TEC or anything put into a Honda. The V-TEC just seems too overated and I haven't seen much excitement out of the Honda motors.

My fave engine of all time has always been the RB26DETT. Other favorite engines include the 4G63 used in the Evo and DSM's, and 13B rotary motor used in the RX-7 and RX-8's!!! :D

3SGTE is my favorite. It was first used in the 1988 Celica All-trac turbo. I have had the privilege of owning two. BTW they are rarer then the SVX.

The motor in the new Ford GT seems to impress me quite a bit. I do like the EG33 a lot, but I think the engine that impresses me the most (probably because it's so high-strung), is the S52 B30 from the Euro '96 BMW E36 M3.

i'd have to say the 1100hp turbo flat-12 in the Porsche 917/30.

Well it's really hard for me to pick one, or even three...but here are the engines that impress me and the reasons...

GM LS1 (346ci OHV 90 degree V8 with SFI) - Simple, classic, SFI system makes an already good design nearly bulletproof, capable of 800hp+ on stock bottom end, all with very affordable upkeep.

GM LT1 (346ci OHV 90 degree V8 with TPI) - Capable of even more power than the LS1, second only because it's much more expensive to maintain.

Subaru EG33 (ahh you know the details) - can't say much about it that hasn't already been said. I like this one because it's
radically different than what i'm used to. As far as I know, this is the only engine in the world that has more than 2 cams and can still be called reliable.

GM L78/L67 (232ci OHV 60 degree V6 with SFI) - probably the most used engine of all time...standard or optional engine in over 60% of GM cars (for a long time), again classic, simple, reliable design. The moral of the story here is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

The hate list:

GM X34 (208ci DOHC 60 degree V6 with MPFI) - I could go on for days about how much this engine sucks. Extremely complicated, poor design, VERY EXPENSIVE to maintain, noisy, bulky. Thank Honda for that one. This engine is solely responsible for GM's attachment to OHV motors. Of course then maybe it's a blessing.

Ford 4.6L (283ci OHC 90 degree V8 with MPFI) - WHY?!?! The 4.6 replaced one of the greatest engines of all time. Ford did what GM is doing now, in bringing back classic motors with new technology, only Ford somehow messed it up. It's a shame, who knows where they could be with the good 'ole 307 by now. That 5.0 was cheaper, more reliable and much more responsive to mods.


That's all I can think of at this time...i'll be back with more i'm sure.

I also like the new 3.5L Nissan VQ engine...so much torque and impressive power!

The Porsche Flat 6 engine is also a beast. How about the new 3.6L NA variant used on the 911 GT3 - 380hp! That's like 106bhp per L!!! :)

My personal favorite was the Allison V-1710 (V-12) that averaged about 1600 HP when two of 'em used to pull a Lockheed P-38 into the clouds. After the war (WWII) they were dropped into unlimited hydroplanes & were tuned to crank out about 4000 HP long before the advent of "chips".
Wow! Mate one 'o them babies to a 4EAT & watch the sparks fly!

Oh....automotive? The Mopar slant six & 2.2 SOHC four. Unmurderable.

I agree with you on the 4.6. If I were to somehow acquire a new Mustang GT, I would seriously consider retrofitting it with the 5.0. The 5.0s are so easy to maintain and have so many mods available that it's almost insane.

Either that, or I'd take it to Saleen. :D

And I hate to do it, but it's kinda like the whole "Your wheels... are on... backwards!" Anyway, it's a 302, not a 307. :)

I'm not saying it's my favourite, but the Mercedes 3.2 diesel in my Dad's E320 CDi is very nice. Smooth, quiet and loads of torque. SVX performance and 45mpg.

I love all the Subaru Engines, they are so lively and drivable compared with the gutless economy boxes fitted to most european cars. Even our 1.2 3-cyl 9-valve Justy had outstanding performance compared to Mum's Vauxhall Nova and Ford Ka which used 1.2 4-cyl engines.

I like the sound of the old Jaguar V12's, a sort of a ticking/hissing purr, but I've never managed to drive one.

As for the hate list, my sister had a 1 litre VW Polo which broke down about once every week. That was a nasty little engine, primitive, low powered and unreliable.

1992 Buick Century 3300 motor - not sure of the designation, maybe Shadow knows, but my Mom has one and man is it one nice engine. It makes decent power, and her car has 178k on it (still young, but we;re talking domestic engines here) and nary a trouble from it. Made it all the way from Albany to Buffalo and back at 80mph without a single complaint. It doesnt show any signs of dying yet.

Toyota 4AGE - very nice little engine. Small but makes okay power, enough to pull my MR2 around. I had let it sit for over 6 mos in the garage while I was at college, got home threw the batt charger on it and it fired up without a complaint. This engine has 205k on it and doesnt mind my abuse one bit.

Even though I had to tear it apart to replace the headgaskets, I like the EG33.

Other favorites that I've owned have been the VW/Audi 1.8T 5 valve 4 cylinder, the VQ35 (smooth and effortless power), and the Cummins 5.9L turbodiesel in my truck (305hp/555tq, 20+MPG on the freeway while pushing 7K pounds is impressive)
