Funny Air bag did not deploy. Can't be too bad. SEAT COVERS ? Take the hood off and drive it.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

correct, both airbags intact.
The VIN tag on the hood, and the front bumper beam match the numbers on the car, so I don't think it has had previous work.

Took the seat covers off, to find minty passenger, and driver side is real good, but has one small split seam on the bottom cushion. The rear seat upper portion, near the very middle, has shrunk some and the stitching is starting to pull in the inner where sun hits.
Car doesn't have paint fade on top, and the only evidence of previous paintwork is on the single left rear splash guard as if the bumper cover on the left rear was at least sprayed some.

Going to go see if the yard near me still has the hood today.....and if so, the hood will be coming off tonight and new one going on this weekend.

engine started right off and was healthy sounding....but there is some sort of exhaust leak up front. The Y pipe into the single pipe has some gasket maker seal (looks like red bubble gum) so they tried to fix the leak, but I don't think it is leaking at that place, think it is leaking before that.....so that may be costly, unless someone has a good stock exhaust they pulled off for me to buy....rear exhaust still looks good.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

the junkyard still had the hood, so I scored that today. took a while to remove it, then I had to find another hood to put on to protect the underhood components.

The SVX hood, was a OEM Subaru, new never painted, left in primer. The underside is like new, the top has what you would expect for a car sitting outside for 15 years at a junkyard, but no dings, dents, creases......should be easy prep for paint, leave that up to my sprayer guy. Probably will have this painted in a couple weeks if he isn't too backed up.

Still has the fuji sticker on the bottom, but the part number sticker has nothing left for numbers.

got it CHEAP.
going to do some radiator core straightening this weekend and monday since monday is a holiday for me. wish me some lucks

Not surprising at all that the bags did not deploy. The sensors are on the frame requiring direct impact of the bumper beam or can possibly be tripped if you're able to snag the front tow hooks hard enough or a hard enough hit from underneath.

Nice job on the find and save. :)

well, light rain today, so I am not able to do the core pull, as I need to use some trees for anchoring the rear and for tying off the come-along...maybe tomorrow will get to it.

Yea I see the hit now. Looks like it hit something high. Rode over the bumper. Car looks clean. Radiator not popped either. Member on here had a new Y pipe made at a local muffler shop.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

Sunday was rain
Monday was one of the only days off I get in the year, Columbus Day....and RAIN.
RAIN
RAIN
RAIN

Then tuesday, was rain and WIND
WIND
WIND
50mph winds all day long.
The leaves covered my SVX I couldn't even see it.

4" of rain in my rain guage from Sunday night until Tuesday night

Finally, today Wed I was able to remove the crumpled hood, install the new hood, and then do some radiator core pulling

It got dark before I got it completed, but I have about 1/4 inch more to go for the left headlight, and about 3/8" or less to go on the very center of the core. (I haven't pulled center point yet, just rights and lefts) I got the right side to about spec. Tomorrow I plan to finish the rest of the pulls- one direct center, one near inner part of the left headlight....

Hood is lined up to be painted next week.
Got the title transferred to my name today.
Still will have salvage rebuild inspection to get done.

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

car is now hoodless again, dropping hood off tomorrow to get paint this week.
Did get the headlights and corner lights all bolted back today, and resprayed the front and rear wiper arms.
Removed the backwards front wheels with the new Michelins, and put them to the back, in correct sides, not backwards.
The rears which had brand new Bridgestones, they are going to get dropped off at tires shop tomorrow to remove the Bridgestones and to install matching Michelins to the other 2.
Whoever installed the rears, torqued them to hella level :(

brakes pads look newer fronts and backs :)

unfortunately, i did see a small indention in the center top front portion of the replacement hood, so going to have to do some minor repairs before just paint......

waiting on the next warm day hopefully, to treat the leather to some Leatherique I have leftover from my last SVX...

What's it cost to paint a hood these days?

bheinen74 10-19-2014 08:25 PM

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

supposed to be 300 to do top side, not bottom. 400 both top and bottom.
I only have a few shops within a 30 mile radius.......

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

update.
Slight derailiment dilemma on the hood.
I dropped it off with the painter Monday, and he was cleaning it up, and he gave me a call. Lots of little dings, imperfections.
I asked how much to fix them he said 5 hours, 275 bucks. I did see a couple ripples when I took the hood off last time, but it had so much weathering and scale from sitting out for so long at the junkyard, I thought it was good but when cleaned up obvious issues.

I didn't want to have 275 in repairs, and the 300 paint, for 575 total, not into a salvage car.
So, I went and picked up the hood.
That was monday.

My options were:
-fix the dents in the hood myself, and paint it myself with either flat black, or semi gloss black myself, to see how good the hood really can be
-go look at the 95 hood listed on car-parts, that is green (95% chance its the wrong green and or damaged too) that hood was listed at 150

So, the other day, I got some body filler bondo, and went to work. (disclaimer, I am not new to using bondo or fiberglass fillers, I have done QUITE a few cars in my life, so no this is not what you think of for a crap job, I did it right)
I was able to get the hood looking about 98+% perfect, and after spending yesterday, and today, I have got a couple coats of etching primer on it now...

Tomorrow, I am going to do a once over with wet sanding, and give it a couple coats of black, and see what i have. It will probably go on the car that way for a while, and to pass the inspection. I will decide if I should keep with this hood, and maybe spray it myself with matching 517 Polo, or leave it black and look for the better hood.

Need to at least get the car passed salvage inspection, so I can put in on the road and see what else the car is in need of....
photobucket is down for maintenance but I have pic ready to load of the hood sitting in my house letting primer cure out, too cold out side for that.

....

Re: soon to be back in a SVX again

Good plan to go DIY on the hood. $575 is a lot of money for a hood repair/paint.

Body and paint work is insanely expensive these days.

I think all the body shops are spoiled by too many high dollar, low labor, replace and paint insurance jobs.
