First SCCA session for the season!

A "test'n'tune" at FedEx Field this past Sunday - most of the time on a wet course (a first for me)....looks like the "winter mods" are working....now I just have to get the Konis bolted on (thanks again, Todd!!) and something else ..... I'm not going to mention... ;)

Note: Brian Garfield competes at the National level(he had the best PAX time for the entire event), as does Kenny Sorensen...GS is said to be one of the toughest classes in the region (just my luck! ) 4 runs for each person, next number is your fastest time, and the last number is the time differential between you and the person who finished before you. The +numbers are numbers of cones hit (which add 2 seconds a piece to your time -- ouch!)

-Bill ("stock"...that's my story, and I'm sticking to it....okay, so tech said I'll need to put my back seat back in next month to stay in GS  )

Checked the PAX ranking, and.....

I did pretty well

33rd out of 209 total runners!

33 GS 19 William Cutlip 1992 Subaru SVX black 58.053 *0.782 45.397 0.200 4.264

GS's PAX index is 0.782, thus my "PAX time" was 45.397. This was .2 seconds behind the car that finished 32nd and 4.264 seconds behind (a virtual lifetime in autoX) the 1st place PAX time (the previously mentioned Mr. Garfield...)

might just have to try this again next month!
-Bill (looking forward to seeing how the Ben&Hocrest "beast" does its first time out, along with the rest of the SVX AutoX team!!)

Are you running the, um..., OEM 21.5 mm front bar and 22 mm rear bar?

Way to make us proud!
Do you leave it in 3rd, or what?

Earthworm 03-23-2005 05:02 PM

You would never reach third gear. I left mine in first and let it force the shift to second.

SVXRide 03-23-2005 06:54 PM

1st gear it is!

As David noted, leaving the trans in first is all that's required with the stock 4HEAT trans. The trans will shift up into second if the course allows you to really get up in speed - which is usually not the case....

Very Cool...

V. nice job. I've never raced an automatic. What are you running for brakes/pads? I would think you'd find the steering too slow. Love to watch some runs, barring that, how about video? Any chance of video of you in action? I must be getting old...even though I've seen some photos of a road race SVX, I hadn't really thought about what it would be like to really ring one out. It's an auto and it weighs 3600 lbs! I may have to take my SVX to the local auto cross or up to Willow Springs. Anyway, congrats and I hope to see video soon...hell, I'd pay to see some of that action. Maybe you could put together a Flash presentation. I'd be happy to help...my company's done 2 infomercials.
Thanks,
WGJ

Great racing, Bill ! Way to represent the svx! :)

Billy, Billy,

Great runs, and very consistent too!! Well done. Those Mini's are something else, aren't they!
I hope you are coming out to some of the Mercedes Club autocrosses - still would like to see how your "stock" SVX compares to mine :D

Harry,
I will definitely come out for at least one MB event in Winchester! The plan this season is to maximize the amount of "seat time" without getting the wife totally "bent" about how much time I'm spending "racing" The car definitely feels faster than last season...I'm starting to instinctively apply a lot of the lessons I learned in last year's level 2 SCCA autoX class - found myself looking several cones ahead this time!! The Konis are going in this Monday, with the OEM rear bar soon to follow (which should basically do it for all suspension work) - the plan being to keep the car stable throughout the season and just work on becoming a better driver.

WGJ,
I'm running SS lines and slotted discs on all four corners (fronts are also dimple drilled). Pads came with the discs (from RaceConcepts - before Wood sold the company) - boxes are still in the garage, just can't recall right now the brand...
I'd seriously recommend at least replacing the stock bushings on the front and rear sway bars with urethane pieces (Energy Suspension, for example - do a search of this site for more info) before taking your SVX to Willow Springs.
I'm definitely up for filming my SVX in autoX action - do you happen to have access to a small video system I could mount in the SVX's grill? I've looked at a couple of systems and they're all a little rich for my blood at this point in time (i.e. $$ is better off spent on parts for the car :D )
PM me if you'd like to discuss this further.
-Bill
