'93 Anni /w Bad Tranny :-( Fix it or sell?

I have a 1993 SVX in great shape overall except that the tranny totally bit the dust one day as I was driving up hill.

If I were to sell it as is in Cincinnati, OH what can I expect to get for it?

A mechanic is quoting me $1597 (this includes tax plus parts plus labor so that's the total cost for fixing the car) with a used tranny that comes with a 60 day warranty. Is this a fair price?

I am not really sure what to do... This is a second car for me that I use to drive in the snow and I don't really need it right now since we wont be getting any more snow.

Any advice is appreciated.

The 1993 models are somewhat more desirable, as they are in fewer quantity. Do you trust your mechanic? $1597 for P+L is a reasonable price for a transmission replacement, but are you getting a low mileage unit?

Did the front differential go out or did it just start slipping?

BTW. This thread belongs in Q&A.

Sorry for posting it in the wrong place, I just wanted to make sure this got some views and answers so I could get back with the mechanic ASAP.

The tranny would sometimes rev between shifts when going up hill or when it was really cold. Then one day I was driving up a decently steep hill and the tranny just wouldn't shift out of gear and it was revving close to readline so I pulled over and put it in park.

When I put it in drive it didn't shift into gear and wouldn't go anywhere so I called a friend to tow me up the hill. We got it on flat ground and realized it was REALLY low on tranny fluid so we filled it up. As it sits right now it will shift once or twice on flat ground and then it slips out of gear and wont shift or drive at all it just revs.

Hopefully this is enough information?

If I were to attepmt to sell it fairly quickly and asked the buyer to pick it up in Cincinnati what could I expect to get for it? There are no rips in the leather, all power windows work, sunroof works it's in great shape save the tranny.

lol because I needed to reply to my mechanic quickly and I wasn't sure which section of the forum received more traffic or where was the best place to post this.

Sorry for the spam...

You can get a better deal than that I would think... I would do a 4.44 swap and contact Jason (Budfreak) on the other forum as you are probably not very far from him....

Ok, so the front diff is good, but the trans slips... :(

Well, the market for SVXs seems somewhat slow right now, due to the economic situation. Pictures of the exterior condition, and details mechanical condition outside of the trans will be helpful in determining its value.

I don't think I'd pay that much for a used transmission unless it was a recent reman with some incredible warranty.

On the other hand, you won't get anything for it if it's not running, and that's a cheap fix to bet it back on the road if you intend to sell soon.

GammeR

I would like to get the VIN of this car so I can add it to our list of 93 owners. They only made 301 of the AE Models, so they are more rare than any of the other years. I would suggest to fix the car before you sell it because it will be worth very little if you don't . Good luck and I will watch for the information. You can post it in the Registration Forum.

PS There is a feature that you can use to look at only the posts that are new, so you will not miss any of them. Most of us use that so if you only post once, it will not be missed. Not much gets by our moderators. :D
