Koni/GC install issues
 

I've asked around to a number of members here regarding my koni/gc install issue, the issue being that my front passengers side koni is completely extended and essentially holding the entire hub assembly from falling to the ground. Many have said this is normal, even koni and ground control confirmed this, however, my issue may be the anomaly. Because now that i have the remaining 3 corners installed, the front passenger side is the only one giving me this issue.

The real problem now is that the hub assembly is so low to the ground i can't the tire on. The car is on 4 jacks. the 3 other tires cleared fine. So what gives? The only other thing i did was front sway bar bushings and stabilzer links on each side in the front. Thoughts/suggestions are appreciated, because now after 2 months of trying to get this project done this is what is holding me up! Thanks in advance, chris

What's more odd to me is why is this the only one? They should all be like that.

What position is the spring adjustment? Is the spring perch welded is a different spot?

It looks pretty familiar to me! I'm guessing you're going to bring the perch up a ways?

I am pretty confident that the perch is in the correct location, I had YT do the welding. If it needs to be rewelded I am SOL because I haven't the foggiest how to do that. And honestly, I don't see how moving the perch up the strut housing would raise the entire assembly. It would simply mean the spring would sit at a higher position and then i would be really screwed because it wouldn't be even with the front driver's side. As it sits now the hub assembly is too low, there is not enough clearance between the ground and assembly to install a tire. The more I think about it, it just doesn't make sense. Clearly something I did along the way caused this.

I meant the perch on the collar... the threaded ring. That's surely too low. The welded ring is the same place Tom put mine. :)

Otherwise, it looks right to me. There are only a few ways to tell... The strut is bolted to the hub right (not tricky!), the KONI sticks out of the GC collar just a bit, and undoubtedly, the top is all threaded up right. You're on.

gotcha, yeah i definately will be ratching the collar up, i just "zeroed" out all the collars so I was at an even setting for all sides, unfortunately I am not at that step yet :( .

The only other solution I can think of is to jack up the control arm to get enough clearance and then put the tire on...

That's probably the way to go.

I'm pretty sure that my adjusting collars are a bit past halfway up. If you're looking for stock height, it might be found closer to 3/4 up as a really rough guess.

I would take both sides off... the one that isn't right and the one on the other side and compare them. You might even discover what happened on the way to success. You can certainly verify if they are the same when you lay them side by side. maybe switch them from side to side?

I appreciate it keith. It really is a mystery. When I had both wheels off, you could visually tell from viewing from the garage floor that the passenger side hub assembly was noticably lower. I can pull down the driver's side hub assembly with everything attached (koni/gc strut housing/end links) but then it retracts and goes back to an acceptable or what appears to be an acceptable spec. Not so with the passenger side, i left it up and then it goes back down until the koni strut can no longer extend.


BTW I am assuming people can view my pics? I tried viewing them from the site and it wouldn't work for me.

I can see them because I have Adobe photo but not sure anyone that didn't could see them.

Is a little hard to tell much because we can't see the "whole picture" I don' ow much about this but I have replaced mine and didn't run into a problem. However, neither did you! except for that one:(
It looks to me like with the car jacked up the spring pushes the strut down as far as it could?

Could something be wrong with the strut itself?

I will look at the picks again. Don't know a lot about this.
Like I said, I just replaced mine and all went well. Got them from Subaru.

That won't work; they're side specific.

Everything looks lined up fine. Safe to assume that your anti-roll bar is fully connected? If so, I'd say, spin the collars up, jack the arm and put the tire on, and put it on the ground.

Use your jack under the control arm and push the hub up enough to put the wheel on. There should not be a problem
