Anybody ever change a PCV?
 

I had some work done today. Replaced a bunch of fluids and stuff. The service expediter guy said he thought his computer cables were bad (they were getting unusual readings) so he wanted to replace them before they would diagnose my 'flame out' problem.

So anyway, he said that it would cost $205.00 to replace the PCV valve, because of it's location on the air system. To which I said, "HUH?!" (I also said, "Perhaps next time - right!")

Sounds like they want to take the intake off to do it. It is located in a VERY hard to reach place. If you have small hands and a 19mm crow's foot, you can probably do it in the garage. I did it, but my hands were cut up and raw for a week afterwards.

I changed it and swore continuously for about an hour.

Tying a piece of string around the new one will allow you to hold it in position while you start the threads. I'd change it again, especially at $205.

Just ice up a beer and go at it.

Steve, you're still working in that S.O. plant that makes pliers, right? I use a crowfoot to loosen the pcv valve and two pair of these to remove and install the valve, makes a ten minute job of it: http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/Beav/5579.jpg The middle pair is what works best.

its not TOO bad if you carefully contort yourself and get your arm in from behind and under the intake (don't disturb the wires and hoses) and start threading it in that way. i remember doing a lot of walking around the engine compartment muttering, "what the @#&%?!?!?"

I think my dentist has some of THOSE tools!

I have changed the PCV twice on the SVX. The "how to" in the locker is a good go by. $205 is way to much unless you have never done it before and want to make a lot of money.:D

Or chase away a potential customer:rolleyes:

205 sounds like a lot

Actual it is in the only place it could have gone.:) It has to be on the intake manifold after the Throttle Body so that it pulls a vacuuum. They as in S engineers decide to put it the middle of the intake. Not a bad Idea, split the two sides. So why not let it be stucking out the top? That would be easier to get to but would like poop. How about just attach it to one of the intake legs directly into just one combustion chamber? Then only that cyclinder would get all the oily smoke from the crank instead of spreading it out over six.

It is in the best place:D

How about sticking out the front instead of the back? A bit more rubber hose, but what would it hurt?
