Recommendations for ATF and Diff fluid?

I'm doing my trans and diff swap this Friday, and wanted to know what recommendations people have.

I'm not looking to use synthetic fluids, but want opinions on the regular fluids I can pick up from my local Autoparts Store (Advanced, Autozone, etc.)

Thanks!

If you do a search there is an array of opinions. Trust me. I'm still confused :p and looking for ideas...

Chike,
I just picked up some of the Lucas 80/90 diff fluid at Advanced Auto. They only had one bottle, so I have to drop by again tonight to get 2 more (not having checked the shop manual to see exactly how much fluid the diff holds...)

Thanks Bill. I'll be picking my fluids up on Thursday. So Lucas 80/90 for the diff. What do your recommend for the ATF? Valvoline?

Chike,
The Lucas diff fluid says it's good for LSDs and I've had good success with their oil additive.
ATF fluid -- I've flushed all the synth out of my trans! I'm now using Valvoline ATF for high mileage transmissions....

Awesome. I'll pick that up as well...

Relevant question?

While I'm thinking, might I ask you guys how many quarts of ATF the tranny takes? I am still without a manual. Thanks.

If I remember correctly, the 4EAT takes about 10 quarts of ATF. However, if you drain it, you'll probably only need to replace about 6-7 quarts.

Don't over do it...

Actually, the pan doesn't quite hold four quarts, as I recall. Just measure what you drain and refill with that amount, assuming your transmission is properly filled.

Re: Don't over do it...

Yes, the pan holds ~4 quarts, but the entire trans will have about 10. If you drain the trans for only 10 minutes, you'll probably only collect about 4 qts, but if you let it drain for a good 1/2 hour, 6-7 qts should be collected.

-Chike

P.S. It's always a good idea to put back the same amount of ATF that you drained out.

Fluid

Hi Chike, I've used Mobil 1 ATF in my trans since it was replaced a couple of years ago. At the same time I replaced the diff's fluid with Mobil 1 diff juice. As for engine oil I've gone over to max/high milage oil. One of which now has synthetic. I don't remember whom it was. I think as long as you use a high quality product you will be okay. Take care and happy draining. BOBB

P/S In the owners manual it says not to use 5-30 oil if you drive a lot of hi-speed miles. However this was based on oil that was available 14 or 15 years ago, so it may not still hold true. "B"

Transmission spec per the owner's manual: capacity 10 quarts U.S.; drain/refill 2.6 to 3.2 quarts.

Oil Capacity

The front diff holds 1.3 us quarts,
the rear diff holds .8 us quarts.
Mobile 1 synthetic is only $8.82 a quart at my local Advance store. I went with that, it's cheap insurance. Tom

ps; the book does say 10 us quarts in the trans. Dextron 2.

ATF

Hi everyone, Dextron 2 has been upgraded to Dextron 3. It is backwards compatible so have fun,and take care, BOBB
