In the field radiator install??

Ok, well, I'm trying to figure out how I can get Joe2Rules crash damaged svx from NYY to NH with the least expence. It was crunched minorly in the nose, and the radiator is toast. the upper support beam for it is also bent quite a bit, Think i can pound it around with a mallot once the radiator is out? How stiff/strong is the metal?

Also, How difficult would it be to switch in a new/used radiator out on the street??? What tools will I need? Any parts that need to be replaced (seals/whatever) when I do the radiator? Please help me out on this, Both he and I are on a bit of a rush schedule for this...Unfortunately, Seeing as its a over 5 hour drive from me to him, I need to get it right the first time.

This is easy. I removed a radiator in the pouring rain in the mud.

You need to drain the radiator, take off the hoses for the coolant and atf (screwdrivers) and also the overflow hoses (squeeze them with your fingers)

4 12mm ( think) bolts, and unplug the electric fan and its up and out.

Make sure you install the fans on your new radiator and bolt it in.

No gaskets required, though you might want to consider bringing an extra rad hose clamp or 2 (the adjustable cheapie kind) in case one decides to break or both.

Make sure you have a funnel to pour the coolant back in the radiator.

You can probably hammer the radiator support outward to a degree.

Good luck!

James-

Bending back the support shouldnt be too difficult, but you wont be able to get it perfect. There are special tools made for this sort of thing that body shops have, but i'd imagine you could do a half-assed job with a bfh. It would be a good idea to replace both the upper and lower hoses, and the thermostat when you replace the radiator.

I got your PM, but I dont have any radiators right now. Wish I could help you out.

Hope all is well with you!

A rope and a tow hook is all you need. Pull it out with whatever you arrive in. I pulled a Geo rad support back to nearly perfect from 8 inches in. Just don't step on the gas too much.

I did that with a come along, pulled out the front of my Nissan pulsar and stuck a new hood and rad on.

I'd move it with a trailer if one is available. :)

I presume to drain the radiator, I just disconnect the lower hoses?

Am I going to have to get under the car to disconnect the lower hoses? (Jacks, working around the skid pan ect ect ect...)

Mike621 01-27-2006 10:34 AM

Youll need to remove the skid thing to gain access to the bottom of the radiator, and jacking it would definitely help. Its difficult/impossible to get under it if you need to without jacking it up.
