Re: axel nut

It's not easy... I used a 4 1/2" grinder with a cut off wheel to cut slices off of the nut until I could break the rest of it away with a chisel.

Re: axel nut

THATS IT! the axel isnt threaded all around there's an indent gap where you can fit in a "key bar" cant remember the actual name i can just cut along that and pull it off

Re: axel nut

That indent is only as deep as the first thread or so, it is intended to bend the inner lip of the nut into that indent to prevent it backing off.

You will want the cut to be on a line tangent to the OD of the axle/ID of the nut.

Re: axel nut

The nut is/has a 'peened in' safety locking lip. Use a drift punch and hammer to relieve and 'unlock' the lip and remove the nut with an air impact and socket (don't remember what size socket) with 120psi pressure and the nut should unthread, seized, stripped not likely, its just normally tight. You are removing and axle because?

Re: axel nut

out of all 4 wheels the dust cap was seized on and unlike the other 3 this one got stripped from my socket, impact couldnt budge it, my full 180lbs on a prybar didnt budge it and by the looks of it its looks seized with all the corrosion around it.

I'm removing it cause its from the parts car and i'm removing the tranny and gutting everything off the car.

try a 10 ft galvanized pipe on the break-over with that 180 lb on the end and take it right off!

+1 that's what I had to do and I weigh 210 and had to bounce on it!

I would soak the crap out of it with PB or WD-40 for at least a full day..... make things easier on yourself and let the penetrant do the work.

Re: axel nut

i wish that was still an option the nut is striped to the point where the socket doesnt grab it to well and slips off

Re: axel nut

are you saying that you rounded the outside points of the nut with a bad socket or somehow??

Re: axel nut

socket fits fine when i tried taking it off it was seized to the point where the socket stripped the nut then i tried using the impact and that made it worse lol
