Radiator Cracked
Hi,
I have a cracked radiator. The crack is in the plastic near the top hose. I have patched it several times and each time the repair fails after a few hours of driving. I'm looking to buy a used radiator or a new one if any are available. (I would also be interested in knowing if anyone has ever de-staked the plastic top and replaced it) Thanks for your help. |

Messaged you, I have one

Re: Radiator Cracked
Mine just cracked yesterday too. Are there no new after market ones available? I haven’t found one yet. Any unused or lightly used ones available from members?

Re: Radiator Cracked
I have my old one (installed AMR) in a box. If someone wants to pick it up I could maybe part with it. I was keeping it as insurance.

Re: Radiator Cracked
FYI, here's a link to the AMR SVX radiator page:
https://amrengineering.com/product/1...r-oem-fitment/ Last time I put my name on the list to get a radiator it only took a month or two for them to get enough orders to do a batch of radiators. |
Re: Radiator Cracked
It's a bummer that Silla went out of business. They had good rads for under $200 and AC condensers too.

Re: Radiator Cracked
Similar problem with mine, I had luck searching Car-Part.com and was able to convince a pick-n-pull in Colorado to pick and ship one to me and I'll be doing the swap this weekend. It looks like there are 4 supposed radiators listed right now (one in Sherbrooke, Quebec!), of course not all are going to bother to ship and it's always a crapshoot with a salvage part that might have the same problem. Unfortunately I don't think there's enough demand for the aftermarket to be able to sustain making a profit producing new ones for us. Good luck!

Here is a junk 93 I have been keeping my eye on lately. It might still have a radiator. |
Re: Radiator Cracked
AMR builds a darn nice radiator replacement and price-wise, not far from the Subaru units that are less quality. If your car is worth it, I'd go AMR but they do their builds based on a number of orders so a wait may happen. My car was down for significant service so didn't mind but a daily or regular use car might require a faster solution.

The problem is not confined to the SVX and has become a major part of radiator repair business activity in this part of the world. |
Re: Radiator Cracked
If you're too cheap/can't afford one, the fix I found that has worked for 8+ months was to use JBWeld waterweld. Made for pools/hot tubs, but is actually rated higher temperature wise than JBWelds own radiator patch product. I strongly reccomend it it as a temporary or semi permanent fix. Can be painted also. I painted over mine with high heat black spraypaint. Blends in better than white. Just my .02 cents

Re: Radiator Cracked
Thanks for all the input. I am currently on the list at AMR but there is no way of telling when the newly manufactured units will be available.
I will be trying the water weld recommended by johnsvx in order to get the SVX out of storage and over to my new place. And after that...who knows... Thanks again. |
Re: Radiator Cracked
Sounds good. It took me a couple of tried to repair the radiator. I'm only driving occasionally, but the last repair has lasted a year.
Good luck! Ian, |

Re: Radiator Cracked
similar problem to my 97 auction car. It was cracked where the top hose clamps on. I was able to find a metal pipe collar to inserst inside the neck. It was a snug snug snuig fit. I had to cut the pipe at an angle since the neck is angled.
It was such a tight fit it had to be tapped into place. I used a copper epoxy spread evenly before tapping. Then after, I reached into and eoxied some more. The hose is now clamped right around the end of the metal neck. It has held up for 15 k miles and several years. No signs of upcming trouble with it either. |
