CV axle
 

Hi,

I'm in need of a front CV axle and have been looking at different places to get them and thought that I'd place a poll to get your opinion.

1. oem - about $250
2. Raxles www.raxles.com $139 + core
3. MWE $105 + core
4. Advance auto $60.

The CV joint is ok but the outer boot split on the pass side. Should I consider replacing both front or just the split one?

I have used the Advance axles with consistently good results. :)

If the joint is ok, get a boot kit from subaru and just replace the boot:D

Go with the advanced one. I've used them with success.

Always replace both of them at the same time. If you don't the other one will break very shortly after.

I went with Advance and got a new CV shaft for $70. It was HARD to get out! The shaft came right out but there were 2 cotter pins that had rusted in place and I spent about 2 hrs hammering and finally drilling the things out. What a hassle.

The CV joint was shot - close to the point of dangerous IMO. I couldn't rotate the outer joint at all. The car was pulling hard to the right and I thought that I also had an alignment issue but all of my issues cleared up with the new axle.

If it weren't for the cotter pins, it would have been a 45 min job.

Does anyone have any tips on getting these rusted cotter pins out for when I attempt doing the other side?

Replace both at the same time. Very least you get dirty once at a time not twice as often. SVXfiles has axles for like $100 shipped with no core charge. Both mine are replaced with these and fitment is perfect and no problems after well over year and probably 20K miles

When we can buy a rebuilt for $60-$80 that has a lifetime guarantee why would anyone mess around trying to put a new boot on the old one? :confused: Just "change the dang thing":lol:

Depends on how long the other one has been on the car, but I would always consider replacing both while I was under there with the car up on jackstands, tools handy, me all icky, etc. :D

I also would always break the axle nut lose before I jacked up the car.:) I would also drive the pins out the correct direction
