SVX/Outback
Is the 3.0 litre flat 6 in the Legacy Outback the same block as the 3.3 in our cars? What other major components do SVXs share with other Subaru's?
|
No, the engine is vastly different. Very few components are shared with other subies. I think the lug nuts and wrench are the same.:D

Thanks for that Matt, I can now take great joy in shooting down my colleague who's been banging on this morning that they are identical engines with exception to the cubic capacity. :p
What does he know? Drives a bloody Forester. Pah!!! And he's selling it because it's not a diesel, diesel for God's sake. Aaarrgghhh!!! Glenn |
the oil filter is the same

The word "Subaru" is spelled the same, on both engines ! :) :) :) :)

I don't know about the 3.0 and 3.3 engines being 'vastly' different, but the former is definitely not an evolution of the latter. Your coworker doesn't know what he's talking about. Subaru has so far produced three different flat sixes - the 2.7 in the XT6, the 3.3 in the SVX and the 3.0 in the Outback. None of these engines share major components such as blocks or heads.
Ask your coworker how this 3.0 engine lost its capacity, in his opinion. :D |

It's kind of sad that they put so much research into developing our engine, and then decided not to use it anymore. I remember hearing somewhere that the manufacturing process was quite complex and expensive, so the high cost may not have been justified for other Subies, which are not as "sophisticated" as ours. I love this engine! Lots of smooth power and non-interference. Matt |
The new Subaru 3.0L flat six is an evolution of the 2.5L flat four.
It has nothing to do with the 3.3L SVX six or the 2.7L XT six. I'd personally like them to 'evolve' it into a 3.5L flat eight. |
or like a 6.0lt Flat 12 !! ohhhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhh
:) |
Thanks for the info guys. That leads me to another question, what is the largest capacity the SVX engine can be bored out to without losing block integrity? And has anyone done it yet?

This has not yet been done (that I am aware of). |
