My grandfather called early this morning and said that 6,000 people in India were on their way to a church on a pilgramage and they all got wiped out. Our church over here is currently gathering money and stuff to send over there.

I saw that story and I think the death toll is up to 27,000+ in nine different countries at this time. I can't remember the last time a earth quake of that magnitude occurred...

I watched CNN and they were talking about regions that can get hit by these tsunamis. They said that the Aleutian (sp) Islands were hit by tital waves from a 9.2 quake in the 1960's.

This is super scary stuff.

Colin Powell said that US ambassadors are already providing aid to these nations. That's veyr good to hear.

My wifes sister is in Thailand at the moment. We are unable to make contact, so like many thousands of others, we are worried.

All communications are down. She should be OK, it seems that most of the casualties are poor locals. This often is the case in these situations. Fund-raising has already started globally, I can see the need going on for quite some time in the worst hit regions

odepaj 12-27-2004 07:17 PM

they said on the news the earth quake was so big that it temporarily moved the earth off its axis and even moved an island (dont remember which one) 100 feet or more.

Looks like over 10 thousand people in India are feared dead :( . My grandfather told me alot of fisherman never made it back because they were lost at sea.

I thought that tsunami's were alot bigger than 12 feet tall... Thought they were about 40 ft or taller and moved really really fast... Is there a site that has video of a tsunami that I can watch??

gsodonis 12-28-2004 08:26 AM

12 meters tall

I believe that the biggest wave was 12 METERS tall when it hit the shoreline, not 12 feet. The water just inland off the beach was around 12 feet deep judging by the buses that were floating with just the tops of the roofs visible.
