$20 transmission filter
 

If I do end up keeping the car, I am thinking about getting a $20 magnafine filter as an additional filter to the stock filter. What do you guys think about them?

I am not familiar with them, but most members have been using a PermaCool canister filter or equivalent. Check them out in the How-To Documents. :)

I am not up with brands but, it is best to make sure the filter you fit, has a bypass arrangement, which will come into play if the filter becomes blocked.
