transmission problems
 

i bought my svx and about 400 miles later the tranny is leaking. I think its the 2 intercooler hoses that are rubber but it seems like the pan is leaking too. I checked the pan bolts and they were loose. Has anyone seen this crap before??

Yeah.... it happens. Replacing the rubber lines and tightening a few bolts is pretty easy.... You may need to get a new gasket for the transmission pan and use threadlocker on the bolts if it still leaks.

Compared to other things that could go wrong, this is nothing to stress about....

Be careful not to over torque the trans pan bolts or you can distort the pan itself. I'm sure somebody will chime in with the proper torque specs.

Mike's right about distorting the pan, this is common. There are two different gaskets for the trans pan. I am not a fan of the cork one, I always used the neoprene one, I would suggest replacing yours with that one and torquing the bolts to about a half turn past finger tight.

Hows the process on these cars? u have to flush the transfer case too?

The gasket I used is from the dealer, I won't use aftermarket parts on my car as they are of inferior quality. I will look for the part number tomorrow. Subaru transmissions do not have a seperate transfer case as most 4WD vehicles do, the ACT-4 system in the US SVX models is integrated into the transaxle system and all components of the drivetrain are contained within one case, except the rear differential of course. There is a seperate dipstick and drainplug for the front differential but everything else uses primary line from the transmission section.

hi the pan gsk number is 31397aa040 ,a dealer may tell you its been replaced by a rtv sealer ,which is true for later years but the gasket is still availible
all so if you have a early 92 the cooler hoses under the starter were part of a campain to replace the hoses and clamps

You shouldnt have to if the sealing surface of the pan is undamaged. And you definitely shouldnt if you end up with a cork gasket instead of neoprene.

those hoses are a real hassle. I got transmission hose for it and its pinching. The old ones go right on and dont pinch at all.

Any idea on what kind of Tranny fluid i should use. I was thinking using valvoline max life dexron III but i heard you should use full syntheic?
