Center Console Pics Request

I want to remove my center console - its cheapy plastic (was it made by hyundai or something?) and rattles and squeaks constantly, and makes it impossible to fit 3 people in the backseat.

Does anyone have any pics of theirs removed?

Also, has anyone modified their ebrake handle to make it... normal, functional?

...like so...

The seat belt retractors are under the rear of the console, so they'll still be in your way.

Maybe you should buy a Hyundai or something. ;)

You know where a real good place for a pistol-grip shifter would have been? ON TOP OF A GEARSHIFT!!! :D

seriously tho, any pics?

Maybe you should change your handle to SVXcarpool :)

I usually stuff the 5th person into the trunk. Saves money at the drive in and on the ferry.

Okay, okay, enough already.

To answer the question....Itll look pretty nasty. If you have a 92 or 93, there will be seatbelt spools. All svxs will have the entire gear shifter in pace, as well as the e-brake handle...mechanical hoohaw included. Also in the way is the shift lock computer and a nice sized hole in the carpet..not to mention the wooshey shaped plastic things fitting the center part of the dash won't fit back.

If the center console is creating such a problem with passengers in the rear seat, your best bet is to custom fabricate a low-profile console out of fiberglass, and have it covered in a nice vynal material..Mabey something that tapers back and only covers the essentials. You can probly relocate the spools, but you would still need a custom bracket (A strong ass one at that) to re-rout the seatbelt itself to the correct position (even then you may be comprimising the working condition of the lower seat belts)Even in that case, the mid-seat rear passenger will have a driveshaft tunnel to deal with
You may want to actually remove the console just to see what I'm talking about. Its rather simple... 5 bolts will do ya (Probly only 2 if it's been removed before)http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/1682/consoleab1.png
To help with all the squeeks..your best bet is to remove the console, disassemble all it's main parts, and rre-assemble it with silicone on the screws and some soundproofing wedged wherever itll go (felt or carpet padding are easy soundproofing materials to get)

Thats the ugliest thing I've ever seen. thank you for the concise (and very well illustrated) reply to my post.

I think the idea for the custom fiberglass is wicked, along with a leather 'shift' boot for the ebrake and cover the whole thing in SVX faux suede. Hell, I could even go Pimp my Ride crazy with it and add a cupholder

damn, i wouldn't stuff *2* people i really disliked into the backseat of an SVX, let alone 3.

.....unless they were midgets, children, or hobbits.

well this car is better designed to have considerations of back seat passengers than the stealth at least.

hijack!

has anyone been inside a newer hyundai? don't knock it until you have. in colorado, an elantra sells for $3000 less than msrp making it far less expensive than a honda fit, nissan versa, toyota yaris, etc. teh elantra is larger, more powerful, and has more features than anything else in its price range. the gt trim level has very comfortable leather seats and other than the most minor of rattles in the high-quality plastic dashboard, it has been troubl-free for almost 40k miles. the only downside is you need to plan to drive it for many years since resale value in non-existant. :)
