WRX Brake booster

I am doing a 5 speed swap for a member on the board and he brought me the pedal assembly complete with master cylinders and even a brake booster. Can we use the WRX brake booster and avoid having to die the SVX one?? Just curious if there was any reason why we couldn't. Just wanted to make life easier

pm greenmarine - if I remember right he used one from an impreza when he did his 5 speed. Actually - gotsubarus did the swap and will probably remember which one they ended up using also.

I figured it could be used without conflict but just wanted a second opinion. I just need to weld up a new bung for the main vaccum line, the WRX is slightly different

Tom,
Did you ever confirm whether or not this works?

TomsSVX 02-06-2006 09:07 AM

Yes, the 02 WRX booster did work well. No issues at all.

This eliminates the need to cut the SVX booster?

Does it affect brake characteristics at all?

TomsSVX 02-06-2006 11:40 AM

Yes, it eliminates the need to cut and die the booster. No it has no change on the brake characteristics. I would still recommend using the SVX booster because the vaccum bung on the WRX booster is slightly different and needs to be straightened out.

So it's easier to mod the SVX booster than it is to mod the WRX booster?

TomsSVX 02-06-2006 01:55 PM

I think it is safer to mod the SVX booster because it is a simple task. To straighten the bung out you risk breaking it, but in that case, you might as well mod the SVX booster then. Just saves money on not buying a WRX booster

Cool. Thanks for the help. In earlier posts it has looked like it's difficult to know how much to cut off, and that if you don't cut it right you can have some problems with the brake system. I don't want that, so I was interested in the WRX booster. But, if there's no need and modding the SVX one is easy, I'm up for it :)

What i did was measured the thickness of the firewall. used shims on the back of the Booster and placed the new pedal assembly on it. this way I knew how much to cut/die

So those of us with manual trannies that may need a new brake booster can opt for a WRX booster if it's cheaper than an SVX one.

Depending on the peal box used
