torque spec

who knows the torque spec for the flex plate bolts that go to the engine. (there's like 7 bolts total). the bolts go in a circle and are located in the very center of the plate.

i looked in my crappy clitons book and no joy finding the specs.so if someone can look in one of their books i would be thankfull!

btw... my old flex plate was cracked around the bolt pattern. ill post a pic later. there was a date on the old plate...it said 5/23/01... this was a new one and it cracked??? i think they were over and unequely torqued bc some of the bolts were REALLY hard to get off and the others were not.

thx

From the 92 FSM page 74 of section 2-3 it is 51 to 55 ft lbs.

How did you get the bolts out? I find it almost impossible without an impact wrench. How do you hold the flex plate when tightening the bolts? I was thinkin the date may be Y/M/D but doesn't make sense. Check the pin alignment of the engine and tranny. Someone else was running thru flex plates and the pins were missing. It will crack if the housing / shaft alignment is not correct.

after reading your reply i looked and determened ithere was no locating pins intalled in the tranny. thank you "svx-commuter". that IS the reason why my flex plate cracked. to tighten the flexplate bolts, hold the front harmonic balancer bolt with a wrench. a second set of hands is needed to tighten the flexplate bolts to torque. another hint for flexplate R/R: you do not need to fully drop tranny. you just need to slide it back far enough to reach in there with a 3/8" ratchet.
here's a pic (yes, a hand will fit in there)

here is the picture of my cracked plate.

I'm glad I could be of assistance. :)
You got to the flex/crank bolts from the top or bottom of the engine?
Did the transmission have to come completely off the lower engine studs for access?
The pins go in the engine block with a tight fit.
Did you have the tranny rebuild? (They owe you.)

(1) i took the bolts from the top of the car.
(2)no the tranny was held up by 2 jacks but the tranny was still (barley) on the bottom threds.
(3) yeah i got pins and installed the transmission and no ticking!!! and im happy thx to you.
