9/4/05 SCCA @ FedEx Field!

Well, I'm starting to get the Bill-Stock Level II beast dialed in...still not exactly where I want it, but you can see how my times dropped from the 3rd to 4th run (cranked up the front Konis another 1/4 turn and dropped the front tire pressure 2 psi) - the car is almost neutral now. Can't wait for the 17th!

p.s. no, they're not allowing Honda CRXs in GS...Ian Baker normally drives one in CSP, but its engine had problems so he was co-driving Brad Leier's Focus SVT (yeah, Ian is another one of the region's drivers that competes at the National level - so this gave us 5-6 drivers this month in GS that drive at the national level  )

Nice runs Bill. Was it a slow or high speed course? What gear did you end up running most of the course in?

Just trying to figure out what I should expect on the 17th...

In the words of the course designer, this was a "highly technical" course - lots of slaloms feeding into sweepers. A lot of cars found themselves pointing the wrong way going into the sweeper at the bottom of the course

p.s. Chike - 1st gear the entire course - which is another part of my still having to dial the car in...can you say throttle-on oversteer? :D
p.p.s Ben/Dave - you'd smoke the 510!! Note that the raw ESP times are almost the same as the raw GS times (Brian Burdette won ESP at Nationals last year, if memory serves me right  ) Note: that Mustang Cobra is running 315/45 Hoosiers on all four corners!!!

I ran at ATCO in Jersey. Maybe I need to come over there. We only had 3 cars in GS. The results are at

http://www.sjr-scca.org/soloii/SJRResults_20050904.html

I had a good time. It was my first. I took the 94L. I think I suprise the announcer with the tire smoke when I launched. I improved quiet a bit by the end. The 2nd and 3rd run were with a 280lb instructor in the car. 4th run I completely boned. I missed a gate, then completely lost it entering a corner coming off the short straight. I stayed in 1st gear he entire time.

I went to remodivate myself to work on the 240z. My father road along and helped out a little on the course. I got up the next morning and he's waiting on me to go work in the garage. I thing he's got the bug now.

Quote from the SCCA Novice Coordinator (none other than Mr. Brian Garfield...)

To everybody that mentioned this yesterday, there's a GOOD reason why most people were loose:

Many autocrossers tend to set their cars up to rotate (oversteer), at least
a little. The problem comes in when you have many transitions. You throw
the car one way, then the other, then the other. In normal situations,
there's only a couple of transitions and then you and your car have time to
recover. However, Sunday's course was probably 75-80% transitions,
particularly going all the way down the hill to the showcase turn and all
the way back up. So, once you get into the transitions, the car starts to
get loose, but because the whole down the hill WAS transitions, if you
didn't "give it up" to get back in line, the back end would continue to
"fishtail".

BTW, the reason some of you may think the course was very difficult, IMO,
was once again because of the transitions. Most drivers get "behind" in
transitions which will bite you in the butt, especially on a course that is
mostly transitions. You have to stay ahead, or on the back side of each key
cone in order to have room for error.
Oh, and if you are going to give up some speed to get back in line, try to
slow down while going as straight as possible, otherwise the back end will
keep coming around...

Lastly, the light colored asphalt IS slicker than the dark. The long
downhill transition part was mostly light colored...

Found an email from someone who actually measured Sunday's course....

I measured the course w/ my trip odometer and I think it was just under 1
mile, something like 9 1/2 tenths. So w/ close to 60 second runs, we were
averaging pretty close to 60mph, faster in some areas, not to shabby. Even
when I look at the video, it STILL looks like a fast course.

-Bill (not at the 60mph point just yet....)

Bill,

your last post which copied an e-mail said this was a pretty fast course where some people averaged 60mph throughout. You were able to do this in first gear only?

Left it in 1st the entire course - the trans shifts up to 2nd when it has to...

okay. From your comment about leaving it in 1st, I wasn't sure if you meant the speed on the course never required an upshift to 2nd.

Team WTF? just posted this video on some of the "interesting" comments they made during their runs on the 4th. You can get a little feel for how difficult the course was in certain sections  :D

Nice. Team WTF drives an RX-8! Definitely seemed like a tricky course in places...
