tranny or something else.....

So I'm not sure what's going on with my pearl, I have never been able to break traction on pavement until a few days ago. Wet or dry but now it wants to every time its wet out. Feels like its just the front but can't really tell. Didn't want to push just in case some bad has happened. I also feel a shudder in the car when making turns from a stop. No a heavy one but can tell. I don't have any engine or trans lights on but not sure if that matters. I'm just at a loss on what it could be or where I should start checking for something wrong. Really worried about it cause its my only car. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Nate Gustafson Or transfer clutches are shot/c solenoid. But my money is on the basket

Jimmy OhyouFancyhuh Artuso I'm just gunna throw a trans in it out of a newer forester and call it a day

David Bruneau You could also get the drum/basket bolted up making that part near bulletproof.

David Bruneau No, don't bolt the plates together.

Armando Licon That's exactly what happened to my Pearlie! I just got it back from a complete rebuild on the 23rd. What a difference! I'm so glad to have it AWD again!

Re: tranny or something else.....

Mine started spinning and chirping the front tires and it was fixed by replacing the Solenoid C in the tail shaft of the transmission.

That transmission ended up losing third and forth gear about 6 months later but I don't believe the two failures were related.

jdsnc,
It is good that you noticed this right away.
You live in NC, how close are you to Huck?
From the sound of it,
it could be a solenoid C, or a broken transfer basket,
both are about a three hour job. (If no problems are incountered)
Depending on who you go to!

Re: tranny or something else.....

Thanks guys. ill try changing the solenoid first. will one work off any other 4EAT auto transmission? Or does it have to be off an svx? and thanks for all the help. i had the trans rebuilt 62000 miles ago so i hope its just that solenoid.

Re: tranny or something else.....

Does the transmission light flash 17 times on start-up? If so you could read the code and maybe confirm the solenoid C issue. My '97 had that code just before I parked it in the fall. Can't remember it though.

The solenoid C is SVX specific.
I do not know if a "regular" 4EAT solenoid will work.
Since it takes me three hours to change one the $20.00 savings are not worth the chance.

Re: tranny or something else.....

Its not throwing any codes. Does it always throw a code when the solenoid goes out or does this seem mechanical and not solenoid related?

No it does not always throw a code when the solenoid C fails.
And if the F/R clutch basket sheared it would not throw a code.

However for either repair you have to remove the tail section to get to the problem, so just get the required parts for either repair and be ready for what you find.

Since no one else mentioned it....

Don't be afraid or too lazy to look at the transfer frictions while you have it open. They are only held in the drum by a big snap ring. Remove the snap ring and they pull right out. You can't tell if they are good or bad without taking them out and checking each one.

Re: tranny or something else.....

Thanks ill do thay if i decide to tear into this trans. i havent worked on a lot of trans so I'm hesitate to try on this. i usually just do swap outs or take them to a specialist. but my fear there is the labor bill. I'm thinking of swaping it out for something more updated. it is the original trans and it is a 92. I already have $2000 plus in this trans and don't want to drop to much more if i can spend the money on a 4.44 or even trying to put in a five speed. I'm more familiar with manuals than autos.
