Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

I have a few parts already, just waiting for a pallet with the rest of the goods.

Have:
WRX Brake booster
WRX Pedal box
Master Cylinder
DCCD Switches

The pallet has almost everything else needed for the swap.

I'm going to be using the stock differential.

As for the dash, I'm going to be using the DCCDPro controller with the STI dash output. I have taken the piece for the gear indicator out, took the letters off, and had a sign shop make a vinyl overlay with pulled out letters and numbers. I made a mistake and forgot to take the front piece of the cluster in, so I'm going to take it back and have it redone. This is where I'd kind of like some opinions. Leave the words as is, or all caps? When I picked it up, they gave me a sheet with 8 more on it. So after the final printing I'll have a few left over for anybody who may want one. I'm also going to wire the output to swap the light from auto on the indicator to the MANU. light in the cluster when the switch is put into manual mode. From the bottom its going to be lit with: 3x green, 2x amber, 2x red. Not sure if I want to leave the backside clear and use colored leds, or use the colored gel sheet with white leds.

Old Tom, I'll let you know when I'm ready for you to make me a crossmember.

Icingdeath, could you get me those pics of the underside of your shifter surround?

I'd like to hear what everybody thinks about the indicator strip, and ideas to make it better before the final product.

That's an awesome idea! I had been planning on just filling and painting over that slot when I swap mine. I'd go all caps on the letters, and thinner. Try to get them to match the rest of the dash lettering as close as possible.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

Aww crap I forgot to do that today after I saw your post. I'll do it tomorrow, I promise :o

The gauge cluster thing is an extremely good idea. I wish I had DCCD so I could do that. A passenger pointed that out to me just today actually. I'll figure something out.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

I actually got the idea from a guy in Austrailia after a phone call to Jeff from DCCDPro. I pointed him in the direction of the forums, and hopefully he'll pop in here. The biggest problem I think I'm going to face here will be illumination. The black background isn't enough. I think I'll see if I can pick up some scraps of tint from a local shop. I also have some of the blue stage gel, and I'll play around with the 2 and see what I can come up with.

Well we had a brake and garage party last night.... Your bike, mine, and the tags are snuggling with the Frontier.

It might be easier to use the remaining seven stickers and lay them one on top of the other. Getting the alignment just right might be tough, but could save on time and fabrication.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

Picked up the transmission and parts last night. Been messing around with some tint and the blue stage gel and while it looks decent, I'm still not quite where I would like to be with it. Does anyone here have experience with film opaquing pens? Would it help to prevent the light shining through the black portion?

So, it looks like I'll just change the lettering to all caps on the next batch and make them smaller to fit the space better. I'll ask them if they can make the black darker as well.

I'll wait to see what anyone says while I hoard up the rest of the parts I need, then I'll go forward with getting the final batch of stickers up. I'm also going to get some stage gels in the colors I want to use and do some mock up installs.

I need: crossmember, clutch kit, DCCD controller, shift boot, 5th & 6th gear, seals for the 4eat stub shafts, and shifter bushings.

Dragoon, can you please keep record of the wiring you will be doing to make the DCCD work? Pictures and info would be great, maybe you can do a writeup.

I will be following the same path in the future and I need to know this. :o

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

Thanks for the pics. I'll keep track of what I do for the wiring.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

That is an awesome idea! If I ever get the DCCD controller installed and working, I am totally going to steal that idea!

I hate having the useless gear indicator on the dash like that - it makes the swap too obvious, but with this, it will look like it was supposed to be there again! :)

Very nice.

Update time. Got the crossmember from Tom the other day. Tom, I got it in the car just for you the other day. Am I doing it right?

It is a lot easier to admire the craftsmanship in the car like this instead of under it. It will make shifting a bit harder, though....

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

You are gona so love the SVX with a standard tranny . I can't believe how much i enjoy mine. If Subi did it in 1992 like they should have they would still be selling them .

dragoontwo 11-29-2011 07:53 PM

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

Mounting parts are on the way. Tore the shafts out of the trans to change 5th & 6th out to longer ratios. Will press the gears off tomorrow and take them to my machinist to machine the keyways down to fit the new gears. Wouldn't you know that my auto decided to crap the oil pump out, so my current trans is now shot..... Good thing I have a nice manual to put in....

icingdeath88 11-29-2011 09:01 PM

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

Well that will get this project going... :)

Longer 5th and 6th ratios will be great. What trans are they from and where did you source them if you don't mind me asking?

And aren't those 6-speed gears nice and beefy? :)

dragoontwo 11-30-2011 08:15 AM

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

I can't say for sure what trans they come from, but they should be Legacy spec B gears. The part numbers are: 32364AA100(5&6 driven), 32341AA380(5 drive), 32337AA060(6 drive).

They fit the 07+ 6 speeds without trouble. To use it in my 06 trans, I need to get the key for the 5&6 driven gear machined down to fit the gear. They changed from a thicker keyway to a narrower one in later years. I can't say if the same holds true for the earlier transmissions, but if you call up Rallispec they should be able to tell you. They also sell the keys pre made for $45 a piece.

I should be getting a parts extravaganza tomorrow.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

Got the 5th and 6th drive gears swapped and handed the other shaft and gears to the machinist.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

Finally got the trans. back together and in shape to put it in the car. Put the car in the garage tonight and mill start with a few little things tomorrow.

Got the beast out today. Time to remove the other ancillary auto parts and prepare for the install.

Longest Transmission Swap EVER...................

It is finally done.* I didn't document the things I did as I would have liked....

*I still have to wire in the DCCD controller, and figure out what to do about the auto overlay for the DCCD info.

Congrats indeed. How's she drive?

Did you already get a DCCD controller?

I do have the controller, I'm just waiting on word from the guy I got it from as to wether or not my TPS voltage is correct for the unit I have.

Is there a place online that i can purchase one, or person here that can help me acquire a new transmission crossmember mount for my 5sp man swap? Thanks y'all!

Your best bet is probably to get a hold of Old Tom (svxfiles)

Finally got the DCCD controller installed. I'll be back with a few pics and install details tomorrow probably. Gotta make everything look nice and get some stuff made up.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

I have most of the info ready to go.

I had to move the display output wires to come out of the same side of the unit as the others.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...-41-36_546.jpg

I had a TCU that was burned out, so I decided to mount the control unit in that case. I drilled the backside to use the control unit top screws to hold it in.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...-37-43_723.jpg

Accelerometer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...-33-41_140.jpg

Temporary switch plate. The switch and potentiometer come with the controller when you get it. It is basically one plate on each side of the panel being held together by the switches. Access hole for the screw that holds the panel on.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...-35-09_723.jpg

Video of display output.

I'm going to work on how I did the wiring tomorrow.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

Here's how I wired up the DCCD controller. I hope this is acceptable.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...DCCDwiring.jpg

You will be left with 4 wires. Ground, 2 DCCD wires, and the E-brake cutout.

You will have to find your own ground but this shouldn't be hard to do as there are a bunch of spots to ground things in the ECU/Fusebox area.

Obviously Hook up the 2 DCCD wires to their counterparts.

For the E-brake cutout, I powered up the car and used a test wire to see which one would activate the cutout. There is plenty of room on the backside of the connector to do this.

That is really, really cool man. Very well done. And thanks for posting the instructions to do it too. :) Congrats. I like how you put it in the TCU box too, that's really smart.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

That's a really slick setup, dragoontwo! Nicely done. Now all you need is some way to replace the overlay in the PRNDL indicator with what the DCCD is actually doing, and you're set.

It always bugged me that after the swap, there are useless indicators in my gauge cluster. If I ever get around to installing a controller, I will try to rig up something similar.

Easiest thing to do is just pop apart the gauge cluster and take out the PRND label thingy. It's very easy once - you get it apart, you'll see what I'm talking about.

Re: Dragoontwo's 6mt swap

Why don't you use the indicator out of the sti cluster, i bought a sti cluster cause that's what I was going to do and I was also toying with the idea of fitting the whole sti cluster replacing the svx one. I like the black face and start up procedure that they have
