what style valve spring compressor?

I have a spare engine I am tearing apart, cleaning, porting some things out and what not. I have a valve spring compressor but it's the clamp type, something that may be used on a pushrod type application I am thinking, does anyone what type compressor i would need to use on the SVX valves? I will try to post a pic of it.

if the heads are off you will be fine using the clamp style compressor. the best one i have used on subarus is the dual handle one with a cam between them. this style lets you rapidly go from spring to spring once the initial adjustment is made. bought it at autozone for fifteen bucks.

The heads are off and that's the style I have, the clamp style but for some reason I think I was having difficulty using it. I will try again, maybe it was just one of those days when I tried it last time.

Re: what style valve spring compressor?

I just went and checked out the head again, and the reason I can't use the clamp style is there is no room to get the clamps in there to hook on to the coils of the valve spring, it almost looks like need one that will anchor on to the inside of the intake and exhaust ports, or something similar. It's like the spring sit's into the "coil well" and there is no room left for me to squeeze the clamp part of the compressor in between the spring, and the "coil well".

this is what i use. had to modify (grind) it a little to make it fit better but works and is pretty cheap

that is the compressor that I have, what did you do to it as far as modification goes? I just don't see how it will fit in there. I am thinking of using a steering wheel puller, and modifying a socket to my fit my application.

by clamp style compressor i figured you meant this:

i shaved down the clamping parts (not sure of technical name) so they were as thin as possible without breaking. got in there ok. if you have the heads off you may want a clamp style or twist style but this one should work fine. i think i also bent in the tabs that fit on top of the spring to make better contact.
