I took today off work

The svx needs some work to get her roadworthy, like the timing belt. I started to clean up the bay a little last week and found this little eyesore!

Over the weekend I have been doing a little at a time. My back only allows a couple hours at a time.

All of the orange stuff is penetrating oil that sat from some rusty bolts(note to self don't spray stuff at the block you don't intend to wipe away immediately).

The mud, sand, dirt, & glass...don't ask, was so deep I practically had to shovel it out of the grooves in the case.

Some advise to anyone washing their engines, used some compressed air to thoroughly dry the engine so this stuff doesn't build up.

Here is how it stands now, I have a long way to go but I feel progress has been made. Especially without any compressed air or pressurized water. Just elbow grease.

Thanks for trying. No copy n paste iphone. I picked up some tiny dremel brass brushes. Hopefully that will do the trick. I'll try to post a pic again.

You are doing a really excellent job on it Mike.

Same as you I find it truly backbreaking work, staying bent over in the one position for ages. Fair dues to you, you are at least getting some benefit from the backache with a lot of sparkle from that block. ;)

The only problem I find with tackling a big clean-up like yours is the fact it tends to escalate; you then go on to clean up the alternator/powersteering/pulleys etc etc.

At least it keeps us busy and amused.

Joe :D

I might have mentioned; the above reply is written by someone who spent 4 hours cleaning up his lug-nuts last week!

Joe

I went as far as to buy brand new ones!

As far as the back goes, I'm not able to move right now. I just got back from a 3 hour session with the dremel. What a difference that little bugger makes. It got in places I could never reach with the wire brush. I think after another wash I can call the block clean. With finances the way they are this is about all I can afford to do to the SVX.

You should go buy 4 jack stands and a jack, if you don't have one, and jack up your car high enough that you can work on it without bending over, that's what I do when I'm working on something at my shop, since I don't have a lift, I find it a lot easier on my back if I don't have to bend over to work on stuff.

Thanks for the tip, I already have them and I'll do just that next time I work on it. Does anyone have knowledge about the factory coating they used on the motor. I heard it's wax based, I also read you can use a variety of other products like WD-40, Corrosion X, Engine Detailing spray and even PAM. I was hoping to use something that will last a long time and not attract dust like wd40 but not permanent like clear coat or paint.

Here is another 3 hours this Saturday, Hydrochloric Acid wash followed by eagle one wadding polish. The polish works wonders, I recommend it for any aluminum parts under the hood.
