Justy Wheels: Irreconcilable Differences?
 

So I found 13" wheels for the Justy today at a yard in lovely Kankakee. They're 13x5 alloys off an '88 Celica. Three are in perfect shape and one's a little...faded.

Anyway, the wheels use a diffrent kind of lug nut than the stock steel wheels. There's a photo in my locker of the two different lug nuts. The one on the left is for the steel wheels and the one on the right came with the wheel.

But the thread pitches don't match. Can I just get 'flanged' lug nuts in different thread pitches or do I have to replace the studs?

There are also two other photos in the same folder, which illustrate the other problem I have. The Justy's hub seems to be a larger diameter than the Celica's, so the little notches that stick out don't fit into the wheels. Can I just have the hole in the center of the wheel machined out a little to fit? There's certainly enough material there.

Go to your local Discount Tire or similar store and get the correct lug nuts Nick. You shouldn't have to replace the studs.

The wheel centerbore can be opened up by a competent machine shop. You might also trya place the does wheel straightening as they should be able to do the job for you.

How hard is it to find a set of Justy 13" alloys?



We acctually had a ECCVT at the shop about 2years ago as a wreck. It still drove around but made bad noises is reverse. Did awsome E-brakes thoe.:D

Sorry if we still had it I'd try and hook you up with the wheels.

I'm pretty sure that no US market Justys came with 13" alloys.

At any rate, I'm sure as **** not going to find any around here. :) It was hard enough finding a yard with 'fer'n' cars. :p

Here's an update, because this has been playing out, daily, in such an annoying fashion.

I took the wheels to a machine shop in town and, when we had the wheels and my spare (for centerbore reference) in his shop I asked the guy, 'so how much will that be?'

'Oh, not much - figure $40-$50...each.'

So that wasn't happening.

It turns out that I can probably fit the wheels on - with no machining necessary - by using spacers. I'll need them to clear in the back anyway. Will the Justy's studs be long enough? I think so, but since I had to go get some (a couple have turned out to be stripped - thanks a ton, Sears) I'm a little worried looking at these things. I mean, they're only an inch and a half long.

I'll let you guys know how it turns out. This is really becoming a pain in the ass. :rolleyes:

New update, for the one person who cares...which is me... :)

I got the spacers and I tried them out last night. The wheels fit. Yay! There's plenty of thread for the lug nuts to grab.

I ordered 185/60-13 Sumitomo HTR-200 tires this morning and they should get here by Monday. I think in a straight line they'll fit just fine, because the overall diameter isn't that big a difference. Turning is another thing. :) Really, I think the only time the tires will rub is at full lock. And full lock on a Justy means it can pivot around a rear wheel. That's not often a useful ability, so I'm not worried about losing it. :)

Another update! I got the tires from Tire Rack on Monday as expected. That's one business day for UPS ground, but then I'm only in the next state. :p

I had the tires mounted this afternoon and after work I set to replacing the rest of the stripped studs. I ended up just replacing all the studs on the left front, because the threads on three of
them were rough anyway.

Anyway, the moment of truth - the wheels fit! Yay! So I torqued up the lugnuts, put the car down, and took it for a short, slow drive around the block. I checked the pressure i nall the tires, then took it to my test track. It's an empty parking lot in front of an old Menard's store.

I can't believe it, but the tires don't rub anywhere. Even at full lock, under braking (throwing me into the door), nothing hits.

The difference in traction is unreal. Without a doubt this is going to shave whole seconds off my runs.

I put a couple really bad photos in my locker, but they show how little space there is behind the front tires. And that's nowhere near full lock.

WOOHOO! The autocross school is Saturday and Sunday is a test and tune day. Maybe there'll be some tread left on these things afterwards. :D

Do you AutoX with the 4WD on or off?

We used to do AutoTest on Grass. I found it impossible to switch the 4WD on and off during the run, so I just kept it on the whole time. We used to get amazing speed off the line (4000rpm and no wheelspin), but the downside was that we couldn't handbrake on the tight corners and had to try and use lift-off oversteer.

My Justy is 2WD. I've considered, many times, converting it to 4WD, but since I've gotten into autocrossing I'm glad I didn't. Anyway, even if it had 4WD, I'd have to switch the 4WD off for autocrossing because these events are all run on pavement. I have photos in my locker.

We have a different type of event called 'rallycross' that's similar to what you're talking about, but those events are far less popular. So they're more difficult to find and definitely less frequent when you do find them.

I have noticed a weird new problem that I am 100% certain only started after I put on the new wheels. Sometimes when I hit the brakes I feel a slight pulse, like the kinds warped SVX rotors will cause, that goes away.

It only happens sometimes, and as I said the pulses fade off.

So I have no idea what causes that...at first I thought maybe I got grease on one of the rotors, but when it didn't go away after the first mile I figured that wasn't it...

Well, it seems I was right. I was able to knock off over 3 seconds from my best time last year. Granted, the course isn't identical to the last one, but it's close.

I don't think I was at my fastest yesterday. All of us only got to walk the course once, so I spent three runs just figuring it out. Everybody was off-course - it was a total mess. This was right after they got done pounding into our heads that we should walk it 3-5 times. :rolleyes:
